That's just a part number, not a model number. Looks like a early M&P (Military and Police). Provide caliber info and the serial number from the bottom of the grip frame. Is there a letter before the number? You will get more information.

Thank you for the info. It appears then that it does not have a model number so I moved this post to the antique S&W forum. It is a 38 Special and there is no letter before the serial number.

You are in the right spot, it's NOT an antique, it's a Hand Ejector and what's referred to as an M&P (Military & Police) model and is pre-model number designation.

That is a refinished 38 Military & Police, 4th Change revolver with replaced stocks from a much later era S&W K frame. Ship date would be around 1917. S&W M&P revolvers were available in only two standard finishes during that era - blued and nickel plated., with special plating being rare. Walnut service stocks would have been standard on that model, with a diamond around the screw and round tops with medallions like shown below. Those were the stocks used from 1910 to 1020. Those Magna stocks on the gun would be maybe from the 1980 era.

As for value, with the finish and Magna stocks, maybe worth $200 to $250 if in good mechanical condition.

The side plate screw currently residing at the back of the trigger guard should be swapped with hidden one under the right grip panel. Someone placed them in the wrong locations at some time in the past. Hint: the flat faced screw should go under the grip panel.

I'm guessing Apr 1917. Both 2591xx and 2738xx shipped in Apr '17.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! Is that a refinish or just frosted nickel? After looking again, I guess it is some type of coating. Interesting they didn't do the knurled end of the ejector rod.

Welcome to the Forum, BDenise.

I'm not seeing a picture of the screws in the side plate. A Military & Police from this era had all round head screws; it didn't have a flat head screw under the grips because Magna grips hadn't been made yet.

OK, I'm now seeing the right side of the revolver. That flat head screw is a post WW II replacement. Hopefully the screw under the horn of the grips is a round head. If so, swap them around, IF you have a set of gunsmithing screwdriver. Hardware screwdrivers have a wedge shaped blade that can slip, marring the side plate.

You all have been so helpful. Thank you! We plan to strip it and refinish it to get it as close as possible to it's original condition. Thanks again for all of your help.

Welcome.

You will certainly not gain any value if you have your M&P refinished , but you have nothing to lose either. The original finish is long gone , except for the ejector knob as noted.

Sandblasted and "in the white" , maybe? If you get the reblue I would like to see before and afters.

Normally, most members here do not like "updating" finishes on original old S&W, BUT in your case, I think you would be doing a service to the revolver and yourself to restore the gun back to original finish & configuration. The gold Medallion service stocks are often found on ebay and other websites that sell stocks, plus members here might be willing to sell a set for a good cause. Just place an ad in the Wanted to Buy section and see what happens.
