Default 38/44 Outdoorsman Pre-Model 23 Followed Me Home This Weekend

I found this gem at a LGS I don't often visit unless I have a Smith & Wesson that needs to see the doctor. The owner is my most trusted gunsmith. I was in the shop picking up a repaired revolver when I saw this one in the case. It's a just shooter as the stocks don't number to the gun, although the remaining numbers match. It's been reamed to accept .357 Magnum cartridges also. I got it for a good price and I like it. It's one I've been looking for for a long time and it's possibly a birth year gun for me too. Here are a couple of pics. Maybe not, bloody Photobucket!!

You'll love shooting it, especially with 38 WC's. Big heavy gun locks up tight and bet it shoots a very tight group. Just curious, did you get it for under $600?

If it shoots like mine you'll love it . BTW mine is still 38 special & shoots like a house on fire with anything from HBWC target loads to Keith level 38-44 loads . Gun will out shoot any K38 I've ever had .

Although it saddens me to hear it was reamed out to 357 specs, I am still envious of your acquisition. Congratulations on the find.

For use as a shooter, I don't consider elongated chambers to be a serious defect. I have a HD like that, and have fired full-power .357 loads (both factory and reloads) in it with no adverse consequences. But not often, as I normally use .38 Special wadcutters. I always have wondered why S&W did not offer the HD chambered in .357, at least after the .357 appeared on the market. It would probably have appealed to many police users.

Isn't that what the M520 was supposed to be ?

It certainly was, but NYSP rejected it and they didn't sell well when offered on the civilian market. Of course they are in high demand now, but that seems common with nearly every model S&W discontinues. (smile)

Picked it up for a little north of $700.00 plus the states cut. I know I'll enjoy shooting it. No worries about scratches etc. I'll get some pics posted on Sunday after I figure out how to get around Photobucket

Load up some 158 SWC's at a velocity to make a 38/44 proud. You'll be proud, too.

Sounds nice...What year is it ....Need pics !
BTW if there is ever a problem with the cylinder you can always fit a recessed Model 27 or 28 cylinder as they are the same length at the front (no need to cut barrel forcing cone), The 27/28 cylinders are slightly longer at the rear (up to dash 2) to accommodate the recess depth but headspace is the same.

IIRC the NYSP didnt "reject" the 520, they found out the new L frame 581/681 was being introduced and cancelled the 520 order to get the new L frames instead.

My understanding was they went to a semi auto, like about everyone else at that time. I could be wrong and would be happy to hear the truth of the matter as I'm getting old an don't trust my own memory much any more. (smile)

I thought they passed on the 520 in favor of the 4in M28 because of lead time on the 520's,

Wikipedia NYSP equipment :
Officers of the New York State Police are issued the Glock 37 chambered in .45 GAP as the service pistol. The New York State Police previously used the Glock 17 from 1989 to 2007, the Glock 17 replaced the Smith & Wesson Model 686 (NYSP issued the Model 681).

This begs the question, which did they issue, the 686 or the 681?
