Help Identify
Hello,
I have a pistol I found in my grandfathers dresser drawer after he passed awhile ago. I was hoping to figure out the basic details on it; date manufactured, or any other basic info. I doubt it is anything special and its beat up but the idea of knowing something about it is interesting. Thanks for the help.
Type: .38 S&W Special CTG
Serial# on bottom of grip: 387174. no letters are there.
Barrel Length: 6 inches
sights look like the photo 'Hand Ejector Pre-War Adjustable'

Well, it is a Military & Police Target, which I think one of the most elegant revolvers made. Condition is not great but it looks serviceable.
Somebody will be along with an age and estimate of dollar value.

Welcome to the Forum. You have a 38 Hand Ejector, 4th Model Target revolver, that would have been manufactured in 1921. Yours is easy to estimate manufacture date, since the round top convex walnut stocks started in 1920 and a MADE IN USA was added in 1922. Ship date was probably 1921 or 1922.
Only a small percentage of 38 HEs were target models, but since so many M&Ps were manufactured, the numbers of target guns could have exceeded 70,000. Gun looks to be in very good condition overall, but the rusting on the barrel and chips on the stocks lower the value to a collector. I would guess a value of $400 to $500 at auction.

SN 387174 suggests it shipped around mid-1921. It would therefore not have the "MADE IN U. S. A." frame stamp.

Thank you for the information folks. Very interesting. My dad and I are going to try and get the pistol cleaned up a bit. At least get it so it doesn't get any worse.

That is a nice piece. Please keep us posted on your clean-up efforts.
A good cleaning and lube will be in your best interest. Should also be interesting for you. Please do not be very aggressive, avoiding steel wool, etc. Just take off the dirt and see what you end up with.
