Here is a very late Pre Model 10 from 1958...***MORE PICS!!!***
I just got this off of an online auction.
Is this one of the last ones before the M&P officially became the Model 10?
Best,
Charles

"One of the last ones" is relative; likely by several thousand, but by total M&P production, pretty close Shipping date can also vary during those years; I have C 412004 that didn't ship until January 1959, no model number even though Roy lettered it as a Model 10.

It's close to being the last. Based on my records the changeover to the Model 10 likely occurred around C436xxx-C437xxx. Some have claimed C438xxx, but I do list a definite model numbered example in the C4375xx range. If anyone knows the exact SN for sure, this would be a good time to come forth.

The photographs of your new purchase are no longer visible to the human eye.

Looks nice and well-used without being abused. Stocks are post-1968 replacements.
Here's C 412004 with original stocks (and a S&W-branded Pachmayr adapter). Shipped to NYCPD 1/13/59.

EDIT:

We always need to keep in mind that no change took place instantly. There was always some overlap. Model number markings are no different. There was a phase in period relative to model marks. Some with lower numbers will have them, some with higher numbers might not. In any case, none of them seem to have shipped until sometime in 1958.

I like this one a lot
I am shocked to see that you bought a gun with that much finish left on it!
Have you decided you didn't like raw guns anymore?

The seller's pics were a little "fuzzy". I was crestfallen when it arrived looking like this....

Mine is 42208X...a 4" taper barrel in what I would describe as excellent, used condition. Got it off armslist a couple years ago when I noticed the seller could only be a mile or two away. No model number.
Put in a bid, he took it we met and did the deal, and I was home with my pre Model 10...all in about an hour.
I do shoot it from time to time, and it is currently loaded with 135gn +P. However, I prefer my Model 15. I may move it along one of these days. I have a hankering for a 3" Model 36.
