Newest Smith here. 38/44 HD.
S&W 38/44 HD we picked up at the local gun show here last week.
Serial number is S748XX. Grips are not correct, but in fine shape for a revolver its age. Slight barrel wear at the muzzle that is hardly noticeable, and one spot of wear under the cylinder release. Under $650 with tax. One of the reasons to check out the gun shows is you never know what you might find especially if in the market for older firearms.

Looks like you have an early post war transition there. Good find ! Even though the stocks have been replaced with newer stocks, still well worth the value you paid ... and ... well worth a letter from Roy Jinks.

It saddens me to see so many folks who want to ruin a perfectly good, and historic S&W revolver. Instead of thinking of an HD as "just a 38 Special" you need to load up some real 38/44 rounds, driving a 158g projectile at a little over 1100 fps for this 4". You will find shooting that ammo changes the character of these fine old service revolvers and you may learn to appreciate it for what it is.
OK, I'll get down off my soap box. (smile)

BTW........Mine was bored out when i got it......So that's what I use....Therefore not running the risk of getting 38/44 specials into my J&K frame 38's.....Had it still been a 38 that's what I would have used in it........

I am no big gun guru and how does the second number equate to the caliber of the gun? 38/44, 45/70 ect.

Well, you are trying to compare apples to oranges. With S&W revolvers, the second number indicates the frame size. e.g., 38/44 is a .38 caliber on a .44 caliber (N) frame. Also, .22/32 indicates a .22 caliber on a .32 caliber (I) frame. This was back when the .22 frame was the Ladysmith M frame (tiny) and the .32 Long was the larger I frame. The .38 Special was on the K frame while larger calibers (.44, .45) used the larger N frame.
With cartridges, it is the caliber followed by the black powder load in grains. So, 45/70 is a .45 caliber bullets propelled by 70 grains of black powder.

Thanks for clearing that up. I thought with the 45/70 it was the powder charge but was totally lost on the 38/44 meaning.

Muley,
My tail wasn't twisted, I was just saddened by the lack of respect (lol).
It may say "38 S&W Special" on the barrel but it's a whole other critter if your load it right. (smile)

Thanks everyone. No conversions on this one it will remain a .38 Special that will include loads like Dave T mentioned in an earlier post to get the true 38/44 experience. Although we both are liking this one Wendy does admit it is heavier than she prefers so this may be one I get to shoot more. She is a big fan of K Frame Smiths being her favorites.

Transitions & 4th Model N Frames... Top of Totem
My “beater” 38/44 5” Transition SN 678xx. Purchased as a parts donor long ago @ $200. Indeed, ‘almost-decent’ original grips and good hammer soon yielded to recipient Transition models, one in 44 Spl. After some decades, this ‘specimen’ itself perhaps coming of age for respect, even if not restoration worthy! Bore decent; to recollection, finish the largest negative. Of course, at the rate I ponder… Moving forward on it in my next life! 😊
Love these Transition & 1950 N Frame models! Unless true basket cases, always prefer to see them kept original & cleaned up as possible or perhaps decent restorations. Yet the latter, often not economic. Quality work pricing pushing beyond resulting ‘net worth’!
Rechambering? Viewpoint respected and perhaps ‘utilitarian’ rather than ‘idealist’. Yet from 'history in hand' to 'nice old gun'.
