Another Brazilian 1917/1937
This came up in another thread recently and Muley Gil asked which sights it had. Here is the other photo, showing the profile, and a couple of the sights. I was thinking that it was a 1937 based on the "low" serial number. Any thoughts? There is no trace of a Brazilian crest left. SN is 194,0xx. Thanks.
I should add that it came with the original style military stocks and the lanyard swivel.

Yes, that is the square notch rear sight, making it 1930s production.

The serial number range for the first group of Brazilian Contract M1917s is 181,983 to 207,043 so your number 194,0xx is pretty much midrange for the first group. Also, the square rear sights are right for that group.
Since it has obviously been modified, it is rational to think the Brazilian Crest has been removed. But I am wondering if it is just possibly a commercial model (?) Are any other marks that are conspicuous in their absence?

I wouldn't know about other marks. I haven't seen any. The only other mark I see is the S&W logo below the latch. Maybe it is a commercial. When I got it the front sight was WAY high- stock sight just reattached, I think. It shot about 1.5' low from 30-40 feet away. I taped it up and hit the front sight with a file. I haven't tried it again, but it looks better.
So Brazil didn't get all of the revolvers in that SN Range?
I look at it in pics and think that it looks just like an M&P snub, but when I take it out of the safe it is SOOO much bigger.

It should say "MADE IN U.S.A." on the right side.

It does, right next to the front sideplate screw. Did Brazilian models have anything special for the SN or just 6 digits stamped in the butt?
Maybe I'll pony up for a letter just to see where it's been.
