Was 6" a common length on a gun this early?

The Combat Magnum with a 6-inch barrel did not become available until late in 1963. By then, the Model 19-2 (3-screw frame) was being shipped. Sounds like K411XXX has had a barrel change.

Does it look like this, except with at 6" barrel?? Here are a couple of questionable photos of my nickel Model 19 (no dash) SN K422470. I think it shipped in 1960 or 1961:





One of the common themes on the early nickel target guns is that the front sight and base were blued and were attached with pins, the rounded heads of which were exposed. If the gun you're looking at has a nickel front sight - it is 99% for sure that it has been re-barreled with a later barrel or has been refinished. Factory nickeled guns also generally have an "N" stamped on the lower left side of the grip frame (underneath the grips) and most often somewhere on the rear of the cylinder (it could be under the star) and sometimes deep in the extractor rod housing on the barrel.

If re-barreled it should be evident from the SN on the barrel (or lack thereof) and/or the S&W repair markings if done by the factory.

It has a nickel front sight. I will look at it again tomorrow and report back. Where is the barrel serial numbered?

In a related vein, if the OP's M19 is a 1961 production, then would it be safe to assume approximately 1962 production for mine with serial number K458,xxx? And would the original stocks most likely have been diamond magnas with black washers?

The stocks would most likely have been Diamond Target stocks, as Target stocks have always been the standard for the 4" and 6" Combat Magnum. And target stocks in the early 1960's had diamond centers around the escutcheons.

Black washers - yes. I don't think the silver washers came into play until the 1970's (maybe the late 1960's)...

K411369 shipped January 1961.

Stock circles with a black oxide finish were phased out beginning in 1970 for K-frames, a little later for N-frames. It is unlikely you will find a serial number in the extractor rod shroud on your Model 19 as numbering of the barrel and cylinder was phased out in May 1957.

There is an "N" under the left grip and under the extractor. Also under the left grip is a "3" a "4" a "B" and the numbers 28999. There is no serial number on the barrel.

The Model 19 was originally shipped with a nickel finish. 28999 is an assembly number stamped on fitted parts to keep them together during the manufacturing process. The other numbers and letters are stamped by individuals who assembled and inspected your revolver.

The 6-inch barrel is a replacement for the original 4-inch barrel.

4" and 6" Combat Magnums would have had a pinned ramp base until sometime in 1969 ,

Can you post a clear picture of the right side barrel roll stamp ?
If not is there one or two periods on the right side barrel rollstamp ?
In other words does it read:

S.&W. 357 Magnum (one dot between the W and the 3)

or does it read

S.&W. .357 Magnum ( two dots between the W and the 3)

If the front site ramp is a seperate piece pinned to the barrel it is a pre 1969 barrel that has been renickeled,

If the barrel and front site ramp are one unit (no joint where the barrels grooved rib meets the front sites ramp) the barrel is late 1969 to 1972.

The barrel and front sight are one piece.
