Default 1958 Pre-19

Picked this up a while ago and finally managed to take some proper pictures today. It's a pre-19 from 1958. There's a tiny bit of holster wear on the muzzle, cylinder high points, and bottom of the trigger guard, but judging by the front of the cylinder and recoil plate, the gun hasn't been fired much at all. All the numbers match except for the stocks, which are unnumbered and have no markings. Could these be the original stocks, or did they all come numbered from the factory? What's the current market value of this gun?

Those could very well have been the original stocks, as target stocks were seldom ever numbered as they didn't require fitting. That one must have been made just before the model numbers first appeared on them.

Nice looking piece. I wouldn't be surprised to see it bring in the $1000 to $1300 price range.

Nice looking revolver!

The Model 19 shipped with target stocks and they were not numbered to the gun. Only Magna stocks were numbered, with the exception of a relatively few very early non-relieved targets at the beginning of the decade of the 1950s.

There seems to be something a bit odd about the shape of your target stocks. It might be lighting or the angle of the pics, but something about them does not look quite right to me. I wonder if anyone else notices this???

I don't know the market value but that has to be one of the best looking revolvers that I have ever seen... and I have a few, including 7 S&Ws.

Jack - you're 10 times the expert I am, but the shape/location/depth of the football seems slightly off to me....

Yes the football relief is off especially for that time frame as it would be a small one to start.

Jim

The size of the "football" is what first caught my eye. But there seems to be an odd taper at the top of the right panel as well.

I'm not at all sure of this, but I am a little bit suspicious.

I will say they are nice looking.

Yes. Here is a pair of factory targets on a Combat Masterpiece that is just a few months newer than the OP's Combat Magnum.

Note the small football:

Thumbs up

Jack I'm no expert but think it is just the lighting.
It did catch my eye too but in one picture the curvature does in fact look correct.
And yes nice GA

The football cutout does look enlarged. I think I can see sanding marks in it that you normally don't see.

They look right to me... Like most of my pre-19 and early 19 ND stocks... But maybe I'm missing something.

BTW OP - very nice Combat Magnum!!!

You guys made me go back and click through photos of about 15 sets of Diamond target stocks on my Combat Magnums, and the size of the cutout varies from shallow to deep, even on guns from the same period. The most shallow cutout is on one of my 19-1's and the deepest cutout is on one of my pre-19s (it looks pretty close to the OP's gun)... Now there could have been some musical grips played somewhere along the ownership path - even during my ownership (I just cannot recall)... But perhaps it could simply be that the cutout size was impacted by who was operating the "cut-out" machine. If they leaned a little harder it cut out more - if they did not lean as hard, it cut out less...

...maybe...

Very nice Combat Magnum,
IMO The stocks are correct vintage for your gun and likely original ,

The football cut is slightly larger than most from that era but the borders are nice and sharp so unmodified IMO,
(guessing the factory football cut was made by some sort of rounded sanding wheel ) .

If you compare the OP's stocks to the ones posted by JP@AK you will notice there is a difference in the checkering border near the heel , The OP's stocks have a sharp turn from the horizontal heel border to the turn upwards along the backstrap which is found on the earliest Combat Magnums up until around 1962 (the same sharp turn pattern is found on the earlier non relieved K target stocks that appear around 1950).

The checkering border at the heel after 1962(ish) makes a rounded turn upwards as seen on JP@AK's stocks.

On a side note IIRC the football cut appears with the introduction of the Combat Magnum in 1955 and perhaps likely added to aid in the extraction of the longer .357 casings .

I think you will find the size, shape, and positioning of the relieved area on the left stock panel varies quite a bit and is probably dependent on who was running the stock machine on a given day. The same is seen on stocks made for the 44 Magnum (particularly from 1957-1959).

The very early Combat Magnum stocks were checkered walnut target. Sometime in 1958 they were changed to Goncalo Alves and the price of the gun raised $10 to compensate. I have a rather mint 1956 CM and it has walnut stocks. My 1960 M19-0 CM has Goncalo Alves stocks. Your gun seems to be on the edge of either. Here's a pic of my 1956 CM. And yes, they are among the best looking of all S&W's. IMHO. Big Larry
