Default Pre-26 5"

Ran across a pre-26 5" this past weekend, it looked right ,but no letter. I think it's one of the handfull made for HHHarris with a 5 screw frame several years after the factory stopped 5 screw production..... can't remember where I read about them, but anyway the serial no. is S-146506. Did I screw up letting it go? No letter throws up red flags to me even if it "looks" right !!

You did what!?!? If it looked correct what was the price? I found the link with two of them, but I don't know what the correct serial number range is. If it had NR Targets and the ramped sight it may be correct then. Will wait on Jim or Bill to confirm the serial number!

I still ain't seen a handgun with a bird perched on the end of the muzzle, other than once here on the forum. Oh, you meant a Patridge front sight.

$7,500 with no Letter? I'll pass,There is NO reason such a rare and expensive Gun should not be lettered.

Very true! Auto-correct on the iPhone likes birds I guess.

I have a copy of the invoice and serial number list of the 1950 45 Targets with a 5-inch barrel shipped to H. H. Harris. S146506 is one of the eight and is correct as described (non-relieved target stocks, ramp front sight blade). The photo below shows one of the other eight.

You have to be careful with any Gun valued at over 5K as your Buyer pool shrinks significantly. As long as You want the Gun for your collection,You'll be fine.

Nice score on a rare gun. I have one of the 6 1/2" barrel guns:

It shoots like a guided missile.

I'm a big fan of the stock Pre-26 and 26, but somehow I had never heard of the few known five-inch specimens. Congratulations on a spectacular find, and my appreciation to the forum members who so quickly managed to authenticate if for you.

There were also a few 4" guns made. I have one that letters to the state of Maine as part of a shipment of two. I believe it is pictured in Tim Mullin's N-frame book.

Kris...There were at least nine of these made. S146525, not one of the eight shipped on August 8, 1960, is engraved and inlaid with gold. It also has carved ivory stocks. I believe the engraving was done in Germany.

With S146506, S146495 (shown above in post #9) and the engraved one I had in my collection for a time, I know of three of the nine.

Hi
To update the known pre 26. I have one of two made in 4 1/2 and one made for Elmer Keith in 4 inch. Two answer 410 bore. I think we can account for about 5 of the 5 inch. There were 9 made in 5 inch pre 25's
and one made in 5 inch and 4 screw. I have both of those.

Shorter 1950 Targets in .45, both ACP or Colt, are guns that S&W should have made a lot more of.
