Welcome to the board, what caliber is this arm marked and did you get the serial number from the butt of the grip frame?

This board is populated with world class experts of everything S&W, unfortunately I am not one of them.
But it appears to be a S&W military and police in .38 special, my guess is it would have been made circa 1910.
This gun is still in production today but now known as the model 10.
Over 6 million have been made so the value of your grandpas gun is not a lot, but should be safe to shoot .38 special, stay away from the plus p rounds.

I suspect the SN you gave is actually an assembly number. The correct SN will be stamped on the butt, and probably also on the rear face of the cylinder. Provide it and it can be dated (approximately). It is an earlier .38 Hand Ejector, Model of 1902, likely from 1908 or earlier.

It very likely shipped during the late 1906-early 1907 period.
