Smile Registered Magnum, 80 years young today!!

Registered Magnum, 2590, shipped to Daniel Rakowski, Chicago, IL on July 23, 1937. Shown in the photo with special holster by El Paso Saddlery and Roper style stocks by Keith Brown. The certificate is a reproduction that was offered by the S&W Historical Foundation a couple of years ago and while not original, displays well with the Magnum. The shipping invoice is from the digital files of the S&WHF. Click on the photos for a closer look at this great revolver.

Bill

That's an outstanding example of one of the most outstanding revolvers ever produced...by any manufacturer. And the holster looks to be a fine example of EPS's best work. You have to love the dyed background.

Not much else I can say about it.

Sighted dead center at 200 yards. He must have liked to have some stand-off when fighting gangsters.

The National Target & Supply Company was located in Washington, D.C. They ordered the Magnum for Mr. Rakowski and had S&W ship it directly to him. It was a common practice in the 1930s to order a firearm through a dealer with shipping directly to the customer.

I have RM #806 which was also sighted-in at 200 yards. Pretty optimistic if you ask me. Probably more realistic with your long tube than my 4" barrel.

Beautiful package and great photography.

DGT...Thanks. I read a letter a year or so ago where Doug Wesson stated the trajectory of the .357 Magnum cartridge was such that sighting in at 200 yards was accomplished by sighting the revolver in at 25 yards and turning up the rear sight a couple of clicks. However, I agree with you, 200 yards is "pretty optimistic".

I doubt that S&W even had a 200 yard range, and that is probably exactly how they "sighted in" at 200 yards.

It probably wasn't uncommon for some shooters to order their RMs sighted in for extreme distances as I suppose that many wanted to use them for hunting and thought it would be best to do that. The average shooter probably couldn't hit a barn at 200 yards from a bench rest with any handgun (whether it was sighted in or not), nor would he have any need to do so. But if that is what the buyer wanted, S&W would do it.

That is a beautiful revolver, about the only way I can think of to improve a RM is to put a set of Kieth Brown stocks on one. Thanks for showing us.

Too many of your guns and of others, inspiring recollection of John Keats immortal words: "A thing of beauty is a joy for ever..." Waxing poetic, sure. But 'just' application for the phrase.
My take

The above is a question I have been wanting to ask almost since I have been a member here! Surely he has at least one junker/truck/ATV/throwdown gun? At least one camo Hi-Point!?
