Welcome to the forum.

An original 2" model has a 25% price premium.

Could the # be C4303 and the 6 be a poorly stamped B? If the finish is original and it's a bright shiny blue instead of the normal satin blue finish for that period, it would be stamped B behind the # on the barrel with a space as you described.

C43036 would make it 1949, and the fish hook hammer and the upper sideplate screw would be correct. As they would be for C4303 (1948). A desirable snubby, but not quite as much as the earlier postwar ones in the S-series having the old-style long action.

Ah...yes. Thank you. It appears that I've added a digit!
Will edit post.

Is that the number stamped on the butt (of the grip frame), or in the "yoke cut" as seen when the cylinder is open? The one on the butt is the gun's actual (and legal) serial number.

Good thought. But an assembly # in the yoke cut and on the yoke would not have a preceding C. Under or over but not in front.

Just making sure we were leaving no stone unturned.

Having some personal experience with the type of rollmarking equipment used for S/N's makes me curious about the one digit being a different font size than the others.

tbug
if you can post some pictures of the whole gun and the serial number in question it would probably clear up the questions.
