Welcome to the Forum.
You have a post WW II .38 Military & Police from the late 1940s. The star indicates that it has been back to the factory for some sort of work. If you remove the grips, there should be a date stamp showing when it went back. 8.54 would mean August of 1954. The serial number should be stamped on the inside of the right grip. The trigger shoe is an add-on.

The S-series M&P snubbies are quite desirable, considerably more so than M&Ps having longer barrels from the same period. The SN indicates it probably shipped around late 1947. As previously said, the small star indicates that it was sent back to the factory for some type of work.
This one seems completely correct, including grips. It wasn't long after this one was made that S&W went to the newer short action with high-speed hammer. This one has the original long action, easily distinguished by the shape of the hammer.

What would a gun like this be worth?

$500 easy. One negative is the trigger shoe. It has probably marred the trigger.

Yup, the set screws for trigger shoes do tend to leave "teeth marks" in triggers when they're removed. Still a fairly desirable gun, which appears to be in better condition than most you'll see in that age range.

Nice little piece. I show about 25 in this range in my database. They were shipping in October and November, 1947. What is interesting is that all of the 2" examples I have recorded in this serial range left the factory in October. All those in this range that I've recorded with longer barrels didn't ship until the next month, November, 1947. No guarantees without a letter, but there seems to be a good chance yours shipped in October.
Others have told you about the star. It would be interesting to know what date code is on the left side of the grip frame.
Even with the marks from the trigger shoe, I suspect this gun would bring $500.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! That's a pretty gun. Look on the side of the grip frame for a R-S or R-B stamp that would indicate a refinish. Having the service department star knocks down the value a bit. But, it's pretty enough that it might bring $500.
