Past auction item 1899 US Navy .38
How bad will I kick myself for not getting this pistol? A lot of honest wear, very little bluing left, but was USN 1000. Sn 5233. Sold for cheaper than I thought it would, but it was in poor cosmetic shape. Stated that it was good mechanically. What would you have paid for this pistol? Fair price?

That gun has been rode hard and put away wet! it's a rare gun, but so are collectors that would pay more than maybe $600 to $750 just to have an example, until they could upgrade it. IMO. Ed.

I have a weakness for stuff like that, but I expect you would be kicking yourself as soon as you tried to find the proper ejector rod knob.

The problem is, how far was the winning bidder willing to go? You can speculate all you want, if the winner had more gas in the tank, he/she may have been willing to go alot higher.

I have one in fairly nice condition... it was around $1700, pretty expensive but I was glad to get it. My own collecting philosophy is to only look at pretty nice original condition or I just wait. I've also stopped short of several that I regretted later. I try to remember that collecting old guns is a hobby of patience where the length of the search adds considerably to the joy of acquisition.

In the event that the new owner is a member of the forum, I hate to give the purchase price. I do not know what the etiquette is for such revealance?

You might answer the question in a PM to the one that asked it. I agree releasing purchase price wouldn't be correct, but if this was bought on an on-line auction or gunbroker, the price paid is listed on line for all to see.

The correct extractor rod nobs are available.
The surface condition of this gun looks to have a lot of significant pitting. That might deter some potential buyers.

Okay, it was on liveauction. Don't have an account so it'll have to remain a mystery. LOL.

Nothing wrong with it that a trip to Ford's wouldn't fix.

If I had a $0.01 for every time I over thought something, I would now have $0.02.
