Help me identify 38 special Hand ejector
Hand eject
Ser # 552xxx
38 special
5" barrel I think?
Fixed sights
Strain screw
Was given to me back in 1981 when my Grandfather passed! He was born in 1898 so Im guessing its pretty old!? I have more photos if needed!

Welcome! Looks to be a .38 Military & Police (M & P) from around 1928. The nickel finish looks original and the mother of pearl stocks are not factory but are appropriate for the gun and era.
It is safe to use with any standard pressure .38 Special lead bullet loads. Your grandfather had good tastes in firearms. Enjoy!

Ser # 552xxx would put probable shipment as being during early 1927. Be very careful with those MOP grips. They can be damaged easily. You might look for some cheap K-frame grips from eBay if you plan to shoot it.

The side plate gap looks a little large to me making me question a refinish.

I'm wondering about the finish also. It initially appeared like a refinish, although upon closer inspection especially of the second photo there is a lot of fine structure and micro-scratching that would at least indicate any refinish is quite old. There is also no discernible evidence of buffing on the logo and other stampings.
Have you checked the under-barrel flat for the serial? If there is NO letter B stamped in front of the digits there (toward the muzzle), it has always been a nickeled gun, although of course it could still have been refreshed. A B would indicate original blue.

One of these days you guys will begin to recognize the difference in chrome (this gun) and nickel.

I also think it may be chrome. Take the gun outside and put it next to chrome trim, or a chrome bumper, on a car. If its nickel, you will notice immediately a difference. Nickel has a greenish-yellowish tint; chrome has a slight bluish tint.
Assuming its chrome, then its definitely been refinished.

That's where I mean  . The first two photos show pretty clearly that there is no B, so this gun did leave the factory with a nickel finish.

I was told by my uncle "his son" that he purchased two of them new in nickel finish. He had two of them but he must have sold one at some point!
My uncle has a very old video has no sound, Shows him wearing them in his holsters pulling them and spinning them on his fingers and reholstering them for all the kids standing around watching! Like the movives! Lol!
