Wife has a Colt Police Positive in 32 S&W Long that she keeps in her night stand and has for the past 40 years. She mentioned the other day that she would like to have something to put in her picking basket or pocket when she goes to the garden. Found a Model 1903 5th change in nickel last weekend at the same show I found the Pre 27 with Cokes on it (different thread). Anyway $200 for the Model 1903 5th change and a full box of Western 32 S&W Long ammunition. The factory stocks show some wear but no cracks or chips. She hated the factory stocks. Well ****. Not allot of options for "I" frame stocks out there. Dug around in the junk grip box and found a set of Pachmayers that looked close. They are for a Charter Arms Round Butt. Fit on the 1903 like they were made for it and the best part is she likes them. The original finish of the 1903 is worn and flaking so not worried about it getting messed up. Wife is happy and I am happy.

Depends on where she lives and what varmints are around,2 or 4 legged.
As a habit, when I am out of the house, I am personally armed wherever I may go.

A Country Boy Can Survive

We live in the country 35 miles North of Kansas City. Several times in the past months neighbors within a mile of us have had some issues with "City" folks showing up uninvited. Example 1:"Truck with 3 guys to move a houseful of stuff" pulls up the 300 yard driveway of a neighbor and backs up to the barn. Neighbor comes out of the house and asks politely what the heck they are doing. Oh sorry we must have the wrong address, the address they gave was 10 miles away. Example 2: 3 city folks follow a neighbor into his neighborhood. They park around the corner out of sight from his house. He is unloading tools and supplies from his work truck. Another neighbor notices them and walks out his front door and up to the car. He taps on the window of their car with his 1911 and asks them politely what they are doing. They take off without answering his question. Example 3: Two daytime burglaries.
Could give more examples but you probably get the drift.
As a side note she has shot several snakes in the garden this year with her house gun but she kept forgetting to put it back in the nightstand.

We seem to have veered off track. It's a nice revolver.

And besides. Who cares WHY she needs a garden gun. When the missus says she needs a new revolver, heck, you buy a new revolver. I have to come up with all my own excuses to buy them. Wish my wife would help me with a reason every now and then!

A few years back, a Wythe County, Virginia deputy was about to go target shooting when he was attacked by a rabid animal. This happened in his driveway.

I personally found a rabid raccoon in my garage 3 years ago. I have found snakes in my garden before. I have found snakes while out bush hogging as well.

When I was a police officer, there were several cases where people were attacked while out working in their yards.

Yes, I carry whenever I am outside.

I carry everywhere it is legal to do so and limit those places that aren't to only the ones that are necessary. My wife doesn't carry and probably never will I would be ecstatic if she wanted a gun of her own.

Since you already have the Pachmayrs, and she likes them, this is a moot point, but any J Frame stocks will fit that I Frame. The only difference is the bottom of the grip frame as about 1/8" longer on the Js. They will overhang that much at the bottom. With stocks that cover the butt there will just be a gap inside that can't be seen.

I'd say that little revolver is just right if she likes it the way it is. If it belonged to me or min, I'd probably want to have wooden stocks instead of a rubber handle, but for its current assignment, the "Goodyears" may even be more appropriate. Just as a FYI, the J-frame target grips from the late Mustang company fit my I-frames well since they cover the whole grip frame. I have a similar set from Herrett that may still be available from that company.

FWIW, I have a bunch of I-frames, but you just exposed a hole in my collection... a 3-4" barrel carrier piece for around yard, garden, and wood lot. I wonder whether I can find a shorter barrel for one of my 6" guns(?)

I like the gun it looks serious with those Pachs on it ,kudos to you and your wife for not being easy prey for the criminals .I live in the country also and we are having the same issues .Last month some guys in a van were stopping at houses and supposedly trying to solicit handyman type work the sheriff deputies stopped them and they didn't have any tools two of them had warrants ( neighbor hood watch works) but so does being armed .

Jeez. Sounds like a AK pistol with a drum mag might make a better garden gun in your neighborhood! I too live in the sticks but at worst we get the "I wanna pave yer driveway" knuckleheads.

I still carry or have a gun nearby at home...

We went outback this afternoon and she shot her "new" gun. 75 rounds from 7 yards at a full size silhouette. All but 5 fliers in the black with most in the 8, 9, 10, X rings. The 5 fliers were still on the paper (high and right) and were in the first 12 shots. All double action as she does not have the hand strength to cock single action. All rapid fire either a double tap, triple tap, or all six. My wife is not a shooter. 75 years young and has maybe 400 rounds through any handgun including the 75 today. Handgun recoil has always bothered her but not with this setup. She never shot her Colt this well. May have to look for another 1903 for a replacement.

As a side note I did have to trim the left hand grip to clear the inside shell casing on ejection. May not have had to if I would have used Pachmayer round butt J frame grips but the Charter Arms were all I had in the junk box and they fit.
