Default My "damaged " .38/44 arrived today with a little surprise.***PICS ADDED***

The damage shown in the seller's pics is MUCH less serious than it appears in the photos. Very smooth action and 100% functional in perfect time.

The surprise is pictured below. I don't suppose that there is any chance it is original???

Best,
Charles

It is a factory box but not from the 1930s. S & W would use these for repair returns, or guns shipping with Presentation cases to keep the liners from breaking from the weight of the gun.

That's a nice pre war example.

Is there a star on the butt after the serial # or rework date on the grip frame under the left side stock?

The box cutter blade cut on the top of the box is so very common and caused by whoever unpacked it from the shipment box.

Jim,
No rework "star" or repair date. The serial number is 62124 making it circa 1940.

Best,
Charles

You gonna shoot Buffalo Bore ammo in that? They have a load that should be the best factory ammo ever for that gun.

That's what is fun about the auctions. Sometimes they work out well. My experience has been much better than casino odds. I have won a few times like that. Keeps me motivated. Congrats.

I would still like to know what on earth happened to this old warrior. Is it an interesting story, or just a tale of neglect or carelessness.

If the top strap isn't bent, that gash could be tig welded by someone who is familiar with welding on firearms. The gash actually gives the gun some character though. You could just leave it as is and make up a good story about how it got there.

Definitilty tig welding or micro tig welding, couldn't figure out what happened to the frame window on the (I Believe) the right hand side. Looks like someone was trying to pry something. Some folks should never be allowed to play with hand held tools and never with power tools. Frank

Maybe got dropped, un-noticed and simply run over by a lawn mower blade.,,or caught in a piece of some sort of machinery and stopped the blades dead.
The strap was probably bent in a bit. The small marks from prying/wedging the strap back upward, splaying the edge outward in the process.

MicroTig or Laser weld specialist could fix those spots up rather easily without heat damage to the surrounding areas.

Welding may not have even needed to be considered for a repair if someone first hadn't gotten to the thing with a file.
That filing removed the displaced metal from the strap around the dents.
If it was still there, it could be pushed right back where it came from with some simple tools and some skill.

Final polishing of the area would be needed either way to blend the area back to orig contour. Then touch up of the blue to blend with the surrounding orig finish.
The former is easy,,the latter not so much for most 'smiths.

Looks dropped to me. Is the top strap possibly bent or cracked? Looks suspicious to me but I'm no expert.

I was told that my 33-44 Outdoorsman, with serial #62041, was one of the last 309 in sequence prior to the start of WWII production. My Grandfather purchased it in 1941.

That serial number would be very close to end of pre-war production, wouldn't it?
