On other threads I've read that generally parts between k-frames are interchangeable. My question concerns the strain screw for the main spring. I read there was two lengths, one shorter and the other longer. I have not inspected yet, but it appears my K-22 has a short screw and the wife's K-38 a longer screw. Is there a reason for one over the other?
Square butt guns should have screws of the same length. There may be minor variations, but shouldn't be a significant difference. Round butt models use a noticably shorter screw.

Both the K-22 and K-38 are square. I'll take pic later. Perhaps it was shortened.
It seems it was an optical illusion and differences in the thread and frame.
The older K-22 frame is a bit thinner and the screw thread portion is longer. The 1957 K-38 has a beefed up frame and the threaded portion is shorter. Both screws measure the same length.
It's not uncommon to find S&W revolvers with shortened strain screws. That's one (incorrect) way some people reduce the trigger pull weight on them. The screw should be fully tightened in the frame for reliable primer ignition. Leaving the screw loose, or shortening it will cause light hammer strikes, often resulting in misfires.
