Help IDing .38 Special
Hello. I've just taken possession of my grandfather's police service (I believe) revolver and was hoping to get some help identifying before I decided to send it off and get it lettered.
It's a .38 S&W Special CTG, black, hand eject, with a 5" barrel. Serial number 379873 (no letters) on the butt, bottom of barrel, and cartridge.
Have found lots of info on the lettered serial numbers but very little on 6 digits without letters.
Any help is appreciated!

It looks like a Military & Police and by the serial number it would more specifically be a ".38 Military & Police Model of 1905 4th Change" with a serial number range for this model of 241704 - 1000000 manufactured 1915 to 1942.

Letter.
You don't have to send the gun, just the serial number and description.
If it were mine, I'd be on the fence about spending $75 for the letter. It might not reveal very much info.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! Your gun was made in the 1920s. If you could post some more pictures, perhaps we can tell you more about it. I wouldn't get a letter on this gun because it's unlikely to give you any more information than we can give you here. This was S&W's most popular caliber and frame so there are many, many of them out there.

379873 is a Military and Police model
I list 3843xx as shipping in 5/21 and 3643xx as shipping in 1/21. Yours is probably in the same date range, first half of 1921.
Don't be too disappointed if the letter doesn't provide the level of information you are looking for. Generally, it will provide the exact shipping date (which you now approximately know), and to where it originally was shipped, usually to a S&W distributor or a retailer. There is some possibility it may have been shipped directly to a police department, etc., but I wouldn't bet much on it. Very rarely were these shipped directly to the first owner, so the chances are slim it would have been shipped to your grandfather.
