Default 1917 Commercial

Thought I would post this again since PB cut off hosting. I think it would be 95% if it wasn't for the scratches on the sideplate. Someone suggested that these may have come from the backside of the snap in a holster and I tend to agree. These pics don't really show how nice this one is.

That is a very nice one. It would be interesting to know what it sold for new in 1921. From time to time, people post snap shots of pages from Gun Digest, etc., to give an idea of old prices. It sure would be neat if someone did the research and organized a photo album of S&W price sheets / catalog pages with the prices throughout the last 100+ years. Of course we would still have to adjust for inflation.

Edited to add:
The 1940 Shooter's Bible catalogs the S&W 1917 Army Revolver with a list price of $37.50. That would be $652.17 in today's welfare state funny money.

I think this shows the weakness of the various inflation calculators. They may be fine for comparing the cost of a loaf of bread and a dozen eggs then and now. But does anyone think S&W could make a revolver to the standards of 100 years ago at any cost? The skilled craftsmen of that era just do not exist any more. Anything even close to the subject revolver, if produced new today, would have to cost in the thousands of dollars. That wild guess may even be low.

CZU, I'm just not sure about that one. I'm wondering, if I send you my FFL's address, perhaps you should send your gun to me so I can study it for awhile, and maybe do some testing at the range?

It looks beautiful, though.

From catalog D-3 and price list dated March 1st, 1923. Price$35.00.
CZU I own #167382 which may still be the earliest one on the SWCA database but it wasn't shipped until October 1922.

I have a friend who works at a lgs and he calls me when they get interesting things in on consignment. He didn't call me on this one, it was a Luger he said I should probably stop by and look at. While I was looking at the Luger he pulls this 1917 out of the case and says I should take a look at this one as well. I ended up taking both with me. This was 2 yrs ago this past January.
