Serial number is on the bottom of the grip frame (butt). It is sometimes repeated elsewhere, depending on when the gun was made.
PS: If you think that the gun has only three screws including the one in the front of the butt, you haven't removed the grips. S&W revolvers have at least three sideplate screws.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! It's a .38 MIlitary & Police revolver from just before 1920 if it doesn't have a letter in front of those 6 numbers. It likely has a mushroom shaped ejector rod knob and no one line "Made in USA" stamp on the right front frame.

Depending on your phone it will probably be easier to email the picture files to yourself and download them on your home computer. Make sure to note where you have saved the pictures so you can then download them to this site. BTW, to do that push the Go Advanced to the right of Post Quick Reply and then scroll down to Manage Attachments in the Additional Options pane. Once there I have confidence that you'll be able to figure it out from there because it's a well known FACT that Marines are smarter than any other service member.

Posting pics for PapaCoop.
One thing I know is that the "B" in front of the serial number under the barrel indicates that this was manufactured with a blued finish.
Well, that, and I'm guessing the stocks aren't original.

Those 6 notches in the bottom of the stag grips are interesting.
That old timer may have some interesting tales to tell.

Hmmm. Those stags were made after 1935 since that's when the magna stocks first came out. Wonder what kind of gunfight(s) those grips were in that recently?

Interesting. I never even noticed them. I bought the gun and tooled leather holster and belt from my 72 yr old brother-in-law. He,(as I) are Viet-Nam vets and he sold it to me for $360, due to a couple of reasons, one being the VA keeps taking more and more of his leg off, and he didn't want it to go to his kids, second, he lives in Upstate N.Y. and can't "have" it. He had a band in Atlanta in the early 60's, and got the pistol from a 92 year old man from Florida in exchange for a Fender Jazzmaster. That all I know about it. Sorry for the long thread.

Pic of the holster/rig, and a better shot of the barrel serial.
PapaCoop also sent pics of the assembly number and patent dates on the barrel, but I figured the experts already knew about those.

Thanks to codenamedave for helping with the pics. Starting to get the hang of this, I think. Anyone have a vague idea of the value of this piece? Should I insure it?
