Late 40's M&P with King Super Target and some scratching
Always wanted a Smith with a Super Target package.
This one came available locally and I had to go look.
It was shown with a pair of non relieved target stocks that got my attention.
The engraving was shown as well, but didn't interest me much as I was focused on the King Target set up and the Smith stocks.
The action has obviously been tuned and it is exceptional.
The front sight is the reflector type.
I don't know enough about engraving to have a qualified opinion, but it does not look like high quality work to me.
I think someone started with a bare bones M&P and sought to make something much nicer. maybe the funds got short when it came time to pony up for the engraving.
It will have to be shot a couple cylinder's worth before it heads to the safe.
Does anyone know if King offered engraving as an in house service?
Is there a proper way to clean and oil the relieved portions of the metal?
I know I am into this deeper than I should be, but value is a subjective matter and is only qualified by the buyer.
Thanks for any information that the forum can provide

You are going to really enjoy that gun.
What I find most interesting is that its likely on a Post war K 38 frame.
The short action post war hammer is the give away.
Can you share part of the serial number to date this gun?
I shoot mine whenever I can.
Its also short action but on a prewar frame.

If you like it, it was worth it! It's a King Super Target! Be sure and update with a range report! Good shooting!

That will be the fanciest gun on the line! Now you need a carved holster.

Serial is C 681**. Near as I can tell it is 1948 maybe 1949.
I thought about some fancy stocks, but favor the factory targets even though they are not original.
Not near Salmon. Live in the Treasure Valley about 15 miles from Boise.

Interesting they converted an MP instead of a K38.
I do have a Official police Super King Target so i guess cutting the frame and working around the grooved top strap must not have been an issue back then.
Good luck with your gun. Hope to see a range report.

Is it just me or is the engraving inordinately deep ?

The engraving looks like post WWII German work to my eye. Often done to lesser expensive GIs guns while in Germany. Lots of coverage, not so much finesse.

According to a very knowledgable friend (of the C--t persuasion), Orville Kuhl did engraving work for King. I don't think that yours is his work, but that's only my opinion. Still a great gun!

King Super Target guns are awesome and yours is no exception! I have a M&P revolver with serial number C441XX and it letters to 1949, so I would think 1948 would be out.

The lack of finesse in the engraving led me to believe it was not done by some who had earned notoriety as an engraver. That is why I thought it may have been an in house job by King.

Clean & Oil the relieved portions: Back out the elevation adjusting screw (to relieve any tension present in the installation).
Tap out the two pins up front.
Remove rib assembly. There, right before your eyes, you will likely see the biggest, nastiest mess you've ever seen. I pitched everything into the parts washer (mineral spirits) and let it soak.
Once cleaned/dried you will see a great wide groove in the top strap/with a notch at the rear, and some nibbling on/around the front sight----in the white. There was no corrosion present---and no sign it had ever been treated to prevent corrosion.
I put everything back together (rib pins first---and If I recall correctly, front rib pin first) without any oil/etc. I'll have a look at it one of these days, to see how it's doing---and proceed accordingly.

Boy Ralph, I would love to see some pics of one apart sometime.
Would really like to see Kings work and how much time and effort went into installing one correctly.
Me, no way am I brave enough.
