Grandfather's 32-20 Refinished
[IMG]http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170815/3fdefc333d2cfebf522ad9a8f9c09215.jpg[/IMG.
My mom has had this old gun for as long as I can remember. Her father got it from someone needing cash in the 40's or 50's. She told me many times she would like to have it refinished. We managed to do it without her. She didn't recognize it when we gave it back to her. I was well pleased with the work APW in Alabama did. To say it was rough is a major understatement.

It cost more than the old gun is worth to someone else but it made my Momma happy and me happy. That is priceless. It was around $500. He earned every penny of it.

In all seriousness...that's nothing short of an amazing transformation. I'd say you definitely got your money's worth.

If memory serves me right the turnaround time was about five or six weeks.

I think you have a great gun. I find myself also putting more money into something than it's really worth. But with yours it's priceless. Great story.

Do y'all think I should get a letter on this old gun? All I know is it made its way to Bogue Chitto Mississippi over 50 years ago. I would appreciate your opinions and any info.

If it were my gun, I'd letter it just to satisfy my own curiousity. The refinish job basically negates any collector value the gun may have had, but still...if it's something that is going to remain in your family, go ahead and letter it. It's only money, and a month or two from now, you won't even miss the money.
This is my opinion, okay? There may be people come along and tell you not to waste your money lettering a refinished gun.
Your family's gun...your family's choice.

I do wonder why they went ahead and did the hammer and trigger. Would have been a lot better had they not. The nickel does look good.

IMO, you did a good thing regardless, but if your mother wanted it refinished, that's the last word. It's not like it was all that attractive before, anyway.
After paying for the refinishing, the cost of lettering is chump change. Do it.

Wow, that is nice.
Is it a brushed nickel?...doesn't look highly polished in a couple of the photos.
Good job.

Pleased to see the extractor star was not plated, but like Dick Burg, sad that the trigger and hammer were. Yes, the work is excellent, and I'm sure Momma was very pleased, but it would have been closer to original configuration leaving those parts alone, even as dark as they were.

It's good for a other generation or three! I like it just fine refinished. Is it going to get to come out and play from time to time? I've got a 32-20 on my bucket list. That one would do just fine.
Congratulations!

Yes. What kind of finish is this and how did they avoid wearing all the stamped lettering? You have a really nice looking revolver.

Hugh, Bob Cogan does good work. How much internal work did he do? It seems like quite a bit for what he charged. Yeah, plating the hammer and trigger stands out as being "off" to a S&W collector. But, pretty beats ugly any day. It's not a collector gun so why not make it pretty? I would have loved to see your mama's face when you gave it to her. I'll bet that's a lifetime memory!
As far as the letter goes, chances are it shipped to a major distributor. But, having the letter would make it a more complete package. Then you can start looking for an original box, papers, etc.

Sorry went to sleep on y'all last night. Yes it is a brushed nickel finish. About the price, he had to replace the ejector rod. Judging from the outside Lord only knows what the inside looked like. But the most of the extra cost was getting the writing laser engraved back on the old gun. Would not have looked right without it. Thanks for looking and the comments.
A couple of questions for y'all. I believe this is a Hand ejector Model of 1902 first change in 32-20 (32 Winchester). Is this correct? The hammer and trigger were mentioned. Were they case hardened on this old of a gun? Thank all of you for your time and interest!

Yes 32 - 20 1902, first change from around 1905. And yes, most of S&W's hand guns had case-hardened hammer and Trigger.

Thank you sir. I have a picture of her when we gave her the gun but she would put a knot on my head if I put her picture on the internet.she turned 78 yesterday but she is still th BOSS! She told me that someone tried to rob their pool hall back in the 50's. Her father loaded up her and this gun and went in search of the thieves. Thankfully they didn't find them. She is a pistol herself!

I normally am opposed to refinishing old guns. It seldom is worth what it costs and a worn gun tells it's own story.
In this case, the story is your mother's and the outcome is just outstanding. It's what she wanted and what was delivered.
Well done sir, well done.

^^^^ This.
If you spent $500 getting a gun refinished that would have brought maybe $150 as-was from someone who didn't care about the history, it's obviously not about the money for you. So why stop now? Get the letter and have the full package.

32-20
That is a super refinish job. It looks NEW! I have one question, about the barrel lettering, was the lettering data completely replaced or was it traced engraved. Or was it roll stamped? If the lettering was badly worn, was this all new lettering. Its hard to find anyone to even come close to barrel lettering that looks that good. Part of my collecting hobby is what I call,
"graveyard" projects, bringing old guns back to life. Sometimes its fairly easy to bring them back to shooter status, if you have the parts, but lettering and S&W logos are another challenge. You did good!

The lettering was laser engraved. Did not see the machine. Check the APW Cogan website. They can tell you far more about how it is done than I can. There could not have been much left to work with when he got down to bare metal. All I can tell you is it did a wonderful job.

You wouldn't happen to have some "before" photos of the barrel lettering and the S&W logo would you? I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to see them. Seriously, from what I can see in your "after" photos, I'd have sworn it was factory.

Unfortunately those were the only two pictures I took. Never had one refinished before . Didn't know it would be that involved until I handed him the gun and he looked at it. Sorry.

I had no idea it was even possible to repair the lettering with a laser. In my humble opinion this was an amazing job.

Getting a letter has nothing to do with the gun being refinished. A letter speaks to the guns original provenance; ie, who it was shipped to, and where. Original/refinishing is about what happened after it was shipped. The letter stands on its own.
If the gun was shipped originally to a distributor, or dealer, or a sporting goods (or other) store, then that is the end of the provenance trail. If, on the other hand, the gun was shipped to an individual, then the fun begins. He/she may have been someone important, in which case there will be more information to be found, or that person may be impossible to trace, and again that is the end of the provenance trail.
Regards, Mike Priwer

A minor point on terminology: That gun was not refinished. It was resurrected, and more than impressively---and I dare say dirt cheap.
Were I asked to pay $500 for that work, I would have paid it immediately, and then run as fast and as far as my legs would carry me-----before they realized their mistake!!
