Default A Victory "find" on GunBroker tonight.

I stumbled across this one that was listed @ an opening bid of $219 and a "buy it now" of $239 with 23 hours left. I went ahead and took the plunge.

It is a 4" .38 spl. w/ U.S. property markings. The serial number looks like V 247922. A DSC gun, maybe?? Just guessing. Would it be from the '43 or '44 time frame?

The lanyard ring hole appears to have plugged by a cartridge case!

Best,
Charles

The property stamp means it is not a DSC gun, but was shipped to the military, likely the Navy. Spring 1943, fairly early for the US PROPERTY, but all looks correct. I guess the condition of the right side explains the low price. Looks like someone plugged the lanyard hole with something like a .22 case? Odd. But if you clean it up a bit, replace the lanyard, should make a nice historic artefact!

I have some spare lanyard rings and pins & will install one as soon as it gets here. It's probably letter worthy too.

I can't remember who maintains the Victory database. But, feel free to add this one if it is of interest.

No Navy markings that I can see...... Did all of the Navy Victories have markings for same?

Best,
Charles

Nope. Around the time yours would have shipped in early 1943, the direct Navy contracts ended (no more US NAVY stampings) and all Victorys supplied to the military went through the Army Supply Program (ASP). This was largely a logistical and administrative change; the majority still went to the Navy. But from then on, ALL military Victorys (as well as Lend-lease BSR's) received the same US PROPERTY stamp.

I think that qualifies a rescue in that condition. I'd definitely take it home at that price, mind you.

I like it, looks kinda trench-arty. Better than mine, when I got it the hole had been plugged with dirt.

An active data base for Victory revolvers is kept by Ordnanceguy on the Forum. a/k/a Charlie Flick. Let him know what you have.

It is strange that a Victory with that SN would have the "U.S. PROPERTY" topstrap stamp. I show some in the 27xxxx-low 28xxxx range still having the earlier "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" stamp. The closest SN I show to V247422 is V2468xx shipping in 3/43 (U. S. NAVY stamp). Yours likely shipped at about the same time. Sort of a sweaty Victory but certainly worth what you paid for it. That's one I would consider doing a beadblast followed by a DIY phosphate finish on.

How is the bore? Rare to have an opportunity to acquire a Victory at that price ; you can't go wrong.
Way to go.
