Default M&P serial#20726 educate me please

Looked at this M&P today. Serial number is 20726. The hard rubber stocks are number to the gun as well as the cylinder. Feels, like the internals could use a good cleaning. From what limited research I have been able to do, I'm guessing she's around the 1900 time frame. Please share any info you have with me about these early M&P's. I'm very interested in taking it home.

This does appear to be a very nicely preserved specimen of a Model 1899 Hand Ejector; I don't believe S&W used the "M&P" label that early.

I think you have it dated about right, maybe a year or two later. The reflective background of the photos (looks like a shop counter, so probably not your choice) creates some odd reflections, but to me the finish looks all original and in uncommonly good shape for this early model.

Others may have more current info on the market value for these, but from what I can see of the gun, the price on the label is not unreasonable.

If it has the original finish (and it appears that it does, as I see some finish chipping on the side of the top strap) and the grips have no chipping then that's a real good price. I sold one recently that was close to this condition, it had some finish chipping which is common with these, and it had nice original but non matching grips and it sold for a few hundred more than this one is priced.

Member mikepriwer is the local expert on these. Agree it is in exceptional condition for an 1899 (which I believe was named the .38 Military at the time, hoping for nice fat U.S. government contracts - some things never change!). These were numbered from 1-20975 so I would guess this one as a 1902 gun, perhaps even later as the model of 1902 arrived and depressed 1899 sales.

The left stock panel is not chipped, it was broken and glued together .

I 'might' be interested at the discounted price, but would also take it as a signal there is room for negotiation. Good luck on your decision.

I am no expert but that is a nice looking revolver and they sure aren't making them like that anymore .i personally would buy it if I wanted it but I always offer an out the door price with any dealer generaly about 10 per ent u der their asking price is where we end up ,but I like the game as much as the guns lol I've turned into an old man with too much time on my hands ,I hope I have lots of time left anyway.

The finish I believe is original as has been noted above by some folks. Probably the worst spots are the cylinder. I noticed the long crack on the back side of the one stock. But overall it seems like it's in really nice shape for how old it is. Based on what I've read in this thread & other I have googled, I'm going to go back & buy it at a slightly lower price. They are holding it for me currently. They have had it since dec of 2015, without much action on it. They also didn't realize how old it is.

Definitely an 1899. There isn't much rhyme nor reason about when different serial numbers shipped, but as yours is so close to the end of 1899 production it almost had to have shipped in 1902 or possibly a little later. A worthy specimen.

Here are some more shots. As I suspected, it's a 5" barrel.

Thank you to everyone who shared their knowledge on these revolvers. I was hesitant to buy it without knowing more. As always this forum provided it.

Got the letter yesterday. She shipped in March of 1902 to a sporting goods store in PA.

It's been mentioned before, but Mike Priwer is THE walking, talking encyclopedia on these things. He can answer all your questions, and all you haven't thought of yet.

The 1899 models are one of my favorites. That straight barrel profile into the frame is just perfect! These are so hard to find in original condition, congrats on your new S&W!
