Default Registered Magnum #3935 found today........

Found Registered Magnum #3935 today at a local gun show.
S/N #56891 and the S/N matches on the stocks, frame, cylinder star, and cylinder.

The barrel has been replaced at some point with what appears to be a 6.5" barrel possibly from a Pre-27 as the rib on the barrel has the checkering.

No box or papers are with the gun.

Maybe sent back for a barrel replacement at some point but no "STAR" stamped anywhere on the gun.

Not sure if I will keep this one in the collection yet, it's the first RM I have owned.

Given that registration number, it probably shipped around July-August 1938. No date stamp on the grip frame indicating that it went back to the factory?

On second glance with the stocks off you can see 1 55 stamped on the left side of the grip frame.......maybe January 1955??
I see no indication of a refinish, so maybe just sent back to S&W for a barrel swap?? I also noticed the ejector rod does not have the LERK on it it so that makes sense that it had to be swapped out with the different barrel ejector shroud.

I noticed the letter B with the diamond shape next to it as well......would be interesting to know if the barrel swap & refinish was done at the same time in January of 1955??

More than likely that it was, and it would have been standard S&W practice to reblue the gun after the barrel change. The knurled extractor rod tip would also have been characteristic of post-1947 factory service work involving a barrel change using a later barrel. Newer barrels would not have the cutouts in the shroud for an earlier extractor rod knob. But a good thing is it looks as if the original 1930s grips survived. Personally, I'd keep it. Not highly collectible, but an excellent shooter.

A standard letter will not tell you anything about that, only about how it left the factory in 1938.

Hopefully Roy can shed some light on this or inform me on how to gather up the information to help clarify the work done. Maybe through the Historical Society?

Thumbs up

The person to contact is Bill Cross for Historical Foundation questions. I believe the 1955 documents have not been digitized yet.

I think you have a very nice gun and a keeper.

Tom, is there a serial number and diamond stamp inside the shroud?

Guy,
I see nothing stamped inside the barrel shroud.
However I have decided to list this one for sale on the forum for a few days, then it goes to GB. Thanks for all of your input on this one, I appreciate it!

I like how some "experts" know more than the folks with the records at their disposal. How many letters has this "expert" sent for. Keep guessing "expert, someday you'll guess correctly.
