Default Pre model 27 box question

I thought that I had read one time that pre 27 boxes were built to the size of the pistol. 3.5" would be shorter boxes than the 6", with 8" variety being the longest. I have come across 3.5" marked boxes that look to be for a 6" revolver. Is my memory wrong or could they be in differing lengths? Any help would be appreciated. I can not download pictures for example.
