.357 Magnum with "Tuskoid" Stocks...pics added
I have posted this mint .357 Magnum before. When a pair of extremely rare Tuskoid stocks by S&W was listed on ebay I purchased the pair for this Magnum. They are shown in the photo below. I, like quite few collectors, have a demonstrated weakness for rare and unique stocks and these are no exception. I have only seen in person one other pair of these stocks and pictures of a couple more. Apparently, the stocks are made of celluloid. Click on the photo for a better look.

I can hear that RM asking "Do these stocks make my butt look fat?" ... Oh yeah, that is cellulite that makes your butt look fat...
In all seriousness, fun stocks on a beautiful .357. I'm glad they landed in your collection.
Question: is the checkering in the stocks molded or does it appear to be cut in a solid block, just like the wood ones? I would love to see a few more close ups of the stocks, front back, etc... if you get a chance.

I am having a lot of trouble getting beyond the deep beauty of the revolver to stay attentive to the wonderful stocks.

RK...I am confident the checkering has been cut on each panel. I will post some additional photos tomorrow.

Make sure they are organic, free range tuskoids. My Nauga farm went belly up when their hides fell out of favor.

They do look a mite better than the Franzite grips that were on my M27-2 that I bought in 1976.

For years I have rummaged through "junk boxes" at gun stores and gun shows. I can't help but wonder if in that time I ever passed over a pair of "Tuskoid" Stocks thinking they were just cheap plastic knock-offs.

That was a bargain considering what those stocks did for the value of that revolver. It's the rarest of the rare. Outstanding !!!

Nice package. I am glad someone who really appreciates then was able to put them together.
I find it interesting that something made of celluloid can be more valuable than the same item in ivory.

Very special set Bill.
Perfect gun for them as well.
I'd like to know about the medallions.
Are they set up and held in the same manner as the wooden ones ?

Great looking grips on a super revolver, congrats on getting them. If they really went out at $2,500.00 that is more $$ than I've ever paid for a firearm of any sort. I guess that helps prove, I'm an owner not a collector.
Please enjoy having them..

Paul...The stock circles securing the S&W monograms on the Tuskoid stocks are stamped SMITH & WESSON and have the U. S. patent number stamped on them. The stock circles securing the S&W monograms on the Magna stocks numbered to the .357 Magnum shipped in July 1937 are plain without any information stamped on them. Not being an expert on pre-war stocks, I assume the Tuskoid stocks are later than the original Magnas.

Me Either Bill so I was just searching some of the previous Tuskoid threads and saw the invoice you had posted of the Registered Mag that was ordered with them and it was May or June of 37 .
I found it interesting, time frame wise, as someone had to know of them to order them so they could at least date to then.

I count my blessings every day for not being a "collector".
At least the people who are get enjoyment out of it.

I don't consider myself as a collector at all, more of an accumulator of oddball and unusual shootin' irons (long and short, cartridge and otherwise) and related items that not too many others have. I guess Tuskoids would fall in that category, but I have none of those. Only saw one pair, and that was long ago.

Bill,
I think you are right that they were offered later than the original Magna grips. Also, as rare as the white Tuskoid stocks are, they only made a small number of them in black. I've only ever seen one pair.

The Magnum letters with Magna stocks (I have them, they are numbered to the revolver and in perfect condition). I know of one pair of black Tuskoid stocks. I asked Mr. Jinks about Tuskoid stocks and he has tried to investigate their origin, etc. but has not found anything. They were never advertised in any S&W literature or catalogs and I only know of one Magnum that actually letters as having been shipped with them.

I assume they are solid, but I don't know. Does anyone know exactly what the polymer used which was called Tuskoid is? There was very little to choose from in the way of plastics available in the 1930s, so I am guessing some type of phenolic material. I have a suspicion they were shaped and polished from a solid block of material (such as wood grips are) rather than molded if the checkering looks like it was cut.

The stocks are molded solid. As far as material goes, I have heard they are made of celluloid, but that may or may not be correct.

I never really liked anything but wood stocks, until now. That just may be the best looking combo I've ever seen. Looking forward to more pics.

What a classy looking combination. The stocks look like butter. And thats a good thing unless they melt in your hand.
