4" 5 screw K22
I stopped at my gun pushers to pick up the 455 2nd model I had coming from Gunbroker (posted in another thread).
He pulls out this nice little 4" K22 and shows it to me knowing how I like vintage S&W revolvers. Ended up trading him a nice 17-4 I had and $50. I have a 6" 4 screw K22 as well as a 17-2 so had plenty of 6"K22s and my model 18-3 needed an older brother. I really love shooting my 18-3 and I am sure this one will be lots of fun too.
Serial number (K1832xx) puts it as a 1953 gun.

I have K1819xx in a little worse condition than yours, mine has some staining on the cylinder. BUT oh my what shooters these 4" guns are. They really think they have a 6" barrel.

Richard,
It's American Black Walnut. I had ordered three sets of grips and they had run out of their standard straight grain wood so they provided figured black walnut without any price increase. These folks do business the old fashioned way.

K-22 5 Screw
Just to get it correct, yes you have a K-22 but more than that; a K-22 Combat Masterpiece, and a real nice one at that. In 57 they began stamping the Model #on the frame under the yoke and it became the Model 18. I'm sure you already knew this.

Man that's a nice k22 steelslayer it sure would look nice in my collection too. And a nice deal too. I traded a 17-4 a few years back for an 18-4 and some money to boot too. But I think you got a much better deal. Congrats on both your new additions to your collection.

I think we're all nuts but who can pass up another great vintage S&W revolver. My rat hole funds are just burning up my safe while I search for another good deal.

To me all K22s are great.
My 18-3 has given me lots of enjoyment for over 30 years. Owning it did more for my ability with revolvers than any gun I own or even straight up target practice. The untold hours and cartons of 22 shells fired while just walking around the hills firing at small objects I would see at various ranges. I got it while working on oil drilling rigs and on jobs with man camps, I used to go out in the daytime while working night shift and spend a couple hours everyday shooting it. Pick a spot somewhere away from camp and the rig and drop the little nylon boxes from the shells and as I walked around shoot at those. Would end up with a lot of the little boxes and would fire at one until the cylinder was empty or it flew out of sight. Different ranges, different angles etc. When it was getting close to time for the rig to move I would pick them all up and start up somewhere near the new location. Worked a week of days, a week of nights then a week off and I fired a lot of rounds during the day when I was on night shift and did it for several years until that oil boom was over. I still like to take it out in some patch of sagebrush and blaze away at targets of opportunity. More fun than the range. My 2 new step daughters think it is fun to shoot too. When we go camping it is always part of the entertainment.
This forum has made me appreciate the older stuff more and wasn't going to pass up a Combat Masterpiece in 22lr.

SWEEeeeet...... at the last NE Ohio Bunching I sold a nice Shooter Grade 1948 K22 Masterpiece w/ un-releaved targets on it to a friend as it was a birth year gun for him.
I asked another friend there to set the value/price....... as karma would have it, he had a shooter grade 1957 4" Combat Masterpiece (no model #) for sale.
Three guys went home very happy.
My birthyear "grail gun" would be a 4" .357 Combat Magnum from 1953.....if it existed ..... which it doesn't ........ followed closely by a .22 Combat Masterpiece.... Steelslaver if you ever decide to part with that one keep me in mind.

Funny how those often seem to come out of hiding in batches. I just picked up a late K22 CM a few weeks ago.

That is one sweet gun. I have 1953 pre-18 also. Of all of the 22's that I have owned, it is far and away my favorite. Enjoy it.
