My first Combat Magnum (pre 19)...and its FACTORY engraved! (now with LETTER)
For a while now, I have yearned for an early model 19 variation. Even if I landed a boxed mint 19-1, I knew I wanted to have a “Combat Magnum” aka pre 19 as well. You don’t see them around much, and very simply, they were first! I have always been a fan of the Combat Magnum, having owned a PA State Police 75th commemorative model 19 and an early model 66 myself. I once read the Combat Magnum described as “everything you need, and nothing that you don’t” and I always thought that line fit this revolver model perfectly. I was never a big fan of the L frame 357s although I do have one. The N frame 357s are of course classic, but sometimes you want something a little handier than the mighty N frame.
Anyways, while browsing an online auction house, I located the below revolver. I recognized right away that there was a mistake; the SN listed for the revolver was K264XXX while the model was listed as a “19-3.” It became obvious that the tag on the shipping carton was spurious.
I was of course hoping that this error would work out in my favor. A factory engraved 19-3 is a special gun, but that pales in comparison to a factory engraved Combat Magnum (pre 19). After studying the style of the engraving, I speculated that the gun could be engraved by Harry Jarvis, or perhaps Virginia LeBlanc. I was not super confident that it was LeBlanc, only because guns that she engraved are few and far between. I later found out from one of our S&W members, that Jarvis actually mentored LeBlanc, which explains why their engraving styles are somewhat similar. Luckily, I won the revolver for a reasonable sum of money. 
Yesterday the gun finally arrived. It came with this relined 1970s display case. I wish it came with a black leatherette case, but hey, I’m not complaining  When I learned that LeBlanc was a distinct possibility, I of course was hoping that she signed this particular revolver, although I accepted that factory engraved S&Ws are commonly not signed.

When I went to my friend's gunshop to get the revolver, I had my fingers crossed that it would be signed by LeBlanc, and lo and behold...
I would love to eventually have an Alvin White S&W, a Russ Smith, etc but finding a LeBlanc S&W is special because they are seldom seen. I was only able to find a few examples (approx. 5 revolvers) of S&Ws she did that have been on this forum. Aside from the scarcity of her engraving, engraved Combat Magnums are also seldom seen. Out of her contemporaries (Smith, White, Jarvis and Rentzschke) I would say that LeBlanc and Rentzschke S&Ws are seen far less frequently than the likes of Smith, White, and Jarvis.
Information on LeBlanc was not easy to come by. She apparently started with S&W in the early 1950s, and was doing pieces by 1955 or a little before. She was mentored by Jarvis, as I stated before. Jarvis retired in 1958 after being with S&W since 1905. If I had to guess, LeBlanc likely had a short stint with S&W. Every S&W I was able to find online of hers shipped 1955 to 1958 or so. I was not able to find any S&Ws she did later than the 1950s. A S&W collector friend of mine speculated that she may have worked only part time, which makes sense as well.

Update - 3-4-16
A while back I finally got the letter for this Combat Magnum! I was very pleased that it lettered perfectly and was not surprised it went to H.H. Harris. I had to get new shoes for it since those diamond targets that were on it from the auction house were not cutting it. Because the gun shipped with goncalo alves, I figured goncalo alves unrelieved presentation stocks would be ideal. Luckily a friend of mine had a like new set, and after a little negotiation, I got the stocks

Beautiful gun. I own a early 60s vintage 19 no dash. Those 50s-early 60s Combat Magnums seem to be the best vintage, as well made as the Model 27. Later ones, while great, did not seem to be as fine-more of mass produced feeling.

Normally I don't care for engraved guns, but that one is beautiful. Congratulations Sir.
I too have a "well worn" shall we say, early "no dash" Model 19, but have never seen a "pre-19" at all. Thanks for posting.

Beautiful fairly early 10 groove Combat Magnum !
especially interesting with small left side TM found on factory engraved guns...
The 60's era diamond targets look nice but that one deserves a set of 50's era Rosewood smooth presentations as the icing on the cake !

Interestingly, 1905 to 1958 ( for Jarvis) is 53 years. Charlie Call started in 1882, and
stopped working in 1946. That is 64 years, believe it or not.

Not sure that there is that much exciting to see!?!? Other than the "LEB" which is pictured, there are inspectors stamps, and nothing else. The engraving stops where the target grips start on left and right sides of the gun. The area of the frame and side plate covered by the target grips is blued but not engraved.
In the last year, I have been fortunate enough to land a few nicely engraved S&Ws. S&W + quality engraving = whats not to like?
Here is the thread about the gun on the far left in the below picture, an engraved Victory model with provenance:

Oh my gosh that has to be in the TOP 10 most beautiful firearms in the USA if not the World. I am totally happy for you and this very rare find. Thank you for the excellent pictures and the S&W brotherhood Super Find.
Congratulations x 10 squared x 1000 x 10k. Unbelievable it really is...
I'd personally dig a hole 50' out in the basement 20' down with environmental controls backed up with gas,coal and solar to protect that surrounded by 1/4" of Hardox 450 3/8" steel encasing 10' of structural concrete. Slight exageration (not much). That is so cool man, good for you!

Congratulations. That's a sight to behold. I think it is the first one i have seen that is factory engraved. Just stunning. Now I have another reason to keep a eye on the auctions and to read descriptions / compare them to pictures.

Jim the new stocks look awesome , between the small L side TM and the late ship date that is an interesting Combat Magnum .
Too bad the letter simply states that it shipped with GA target "Grips" with no indication if they were smooth or checkered but one would expect smooth presentations on a special gun like that , While a set with the small football relief might be more of what it came with I like the non relieved better .
Kinda makes sense it would have shipped later than other known K264 prefix guns with the small L side TM stored away for future engraving.
Neat gun !

It's a beauty! Not a fan of engraved weapons, but yours is, indeed, special. I have an old 19 4inch I bought in 1975, my first handgun. It is very special to me as I once killed a mountain lion with it. I always thought that the 4 inch 19 was considered the "combat magnum". But then even though I have some collectable pieces, I am really more of what many would call a gatherer rather than a collector. The old standard 125 gr jhp put a quick stop to that lion. One shot was all it took.

Usually I don't go in for "ornate" but for inexplicable reasons I've recently started to really like engraved guns. I imagine I'll have to own one at some point and threads like this push me toward making that a sooner vs later goal. Thanks for the inspiration.

Engraved Combat Magnum
WOW! What a find and great sleuthing job. This thread was lurking in a surprisingly unread S&W Forum from almost two months ago. I'm sure glad I discovered it. That beautiful gun is in a completely different category than my beloved 98% nickel plated 19-4.

Just beautiful. I was reviewing this post. I started looking for other Combat Magnums with earlier serial numbers that are factory engraved. I have yet to find one in the posts. Jim what a unique find. One to be proud of for sure.
