Default Very tempted by a Model of 1950 #S94415

Came across this one today. Not I really don't know what to do. It says come home with me. Some blueing loss behind the trigger guard, but it has been well taken care of. Smooth action, mechanically feels very sound.

"It says come home with me."

It's always wise to heed these voices.

WWDEJD? (What would Dale Earnhardt Jr do?)

If it is at a good price, why not buy it?

She is very nice! You know by coming here with the story-you want it- we are very bad influences says my wife from the money spent. Like going to a liquor store to have an A.A. meeting.

At $1250, I'd have bought it already, even though those stocks are not correct. A very nice looking and desirable piece.

It is a 5 screw & I didn't take a photo of that side. I think I'm going to do it, even though I shouldn't. It also has some moon clips with it. It would mate up with my other 25-5's in 45 Colt & the PC 625-8 I just bought.

Also of interesting note is the 38th BB Gun Values & the 4th edition SCSW are drastically different on the prices

It's an OK price since it doesn't have the correct stocks that will cost you a pretty penny for a very nice pair.

Good price if that's an original high polished blue as opposed to the standard dusty blue, sporting a TT & TH too. I believe that would have been a option then. Other than the wrong grips, it looks like a nice deal.
diamond Magnas can be had for a couple c notes or less and you can sell those targets for a few bucks to help. The pre 26's are sleepers as there were only 2768 made.

They really are terrific shooters. I like to say that they make me look like a better shooter than I really am. I like punching big holes in the target, makes it much easier than lugging the spotting scope around.

Start @ $1,000 and negotiate. Use the incorrect stocks as a bargaining tool. I'll bet $1100-$1150 will get it especially if you bring CASH to the table and you are a regular customer.

The shop has already let you take the stocks off & take pics. They want the sale. They'll come down off the sticker.

I'd haggle & leave the store with it.

Best,
Charles

They know me in there. Good folks. The prices on the used guns are virtually non negotiable. I've brought home several Smith's from them.

The 1950 in .45 ACP is a really fun revolver to shoot. I like my .44 1950 more, but the .45 gets more trigger time. Mine is a tack driver with FMJ. In my opinion, it is a fair price, assuming everything checks out. If I could afford it, I don't think I'd be able to pass it up if I didn't already have one.

I traded for this one (S76XXX) last year. Asking price at the time was $1650 just for comparison to what you're considering. Great guns, you'll like it if you get it. Good luck.

I am a huge fan of 45acp revolvers. My model of 1950 is my favorite of the five I own. Considering less than 2800 of them were made over an eleven year span, they are not all that common. That price is not outrageous. I paid less for mine with correct target stocks and an unusual target trigger, but I would certainly consider that one if the condition is really good.

Get it, you won't regret it.

I recently adopted a Model of 1950, ser # 94098, so they were pretty close.

Well, an effort to make sure it went to a good home. I put some money on it today. Couldn't let it get away. The guys at the gun shop had told me it's the only Model of 1950 they had ever seen come in. From talking to them, I'm the 3rd owner in its history. The first was the second guys granddad. Granddad carried it in a holster when in the woods. They said the prior owner reported some light strikes, so I will put a new spring in it once I get it home.

I am so happy that gun is going to a good home and will see daylight be shot and taken care of. I'm also happy for the op to get such a beauty. Enjoy

Before you replace the spring, check to make sure the screw is tight. Even if the screw is tight, instead of replacing the spring you could just get a new screw and and make sure it is a little bit longer.

Personalty, I like the stocks, even if they are not correct. Like the gun even more of course.

Thanks steelslaver, I'll try that first. I like the stocks also. I have some KB roper's on order so when they show up possibly in the spring...maybe here is where they end up.

Here's a 5" Model of 1950 to look at until your's arrives. Has cylinders for 45 ACP and 45 Colt.

I sort of inherited one a few months ago.
My younger brother passed away a year ago, and as we were going through his collection/accumulation of antique cars, old car parts, guns, pocket watches, coins, etc. to put in the estate auction to pay of some properties he had mortgages on, my mom said if there were any of the guns I would like to keep, take them.
As I was coon-fingering the old Colt SA Armies, 1'st Gen Ruger Single Six .22's, etc., I came across a large S & W revolver that said ".45 Cal. model 1950" on the side of the barrel that is about 6 1/2" long.
I said " I'll take this one", not knowing at the time if it was a .45 Colt or .45 ACP.
We have been very busy with all the estate stuff, some Probate items, regular jobs, and so on, and I almost forgot about the gun until a month ago. It took a couple of hours over several days of digging through my things to find it again.
A quick peek in the cylinder holes told me it was an ACP, which is fine since I have two Gov't Models and lots of ammo.
Have always preferred revolvers no larger than K or L frames for their ease of portability and reduced bulk.
Have not decided for sure what to do with this one. Has Ser. # S 772xx.
Also has a few scattered fairly minor rust specks from being wrapped up in a ragged old cotton bath towel in our Ozarks humidity for who knows how many years along with a bunch of first, second, and third generation SA Army's, older Rugers, and others.
It has a Target hammer, and grooved trigger with an old trigger shoe attached.
I'm starting to think of keeping it and getting several hundred Auto Rim hulls to load for it.
Action is smooth as glass.
BTW, it has the factory grips that are in what I would call " Excellent " condition.

Fellow forum member Dave Keith cut the barrel to 5" and moved the sight back. He also custom fit the cylinder and had some feller down south nickel plate it.

It turned out well.

I failed to mention yesterday, that as I was headed out the door I was talking to the head guy & he told me they almost put a 2K price on that gun. I'm glad they didn't

You're going to love that revolver, and you nearly stole it. At the Tulsa fall show in 2015 I saw two and both were priced at $1,995.00. Mine is my favorite S&W. I keep talking about lettering it, but I procrastinate. Mine appears to be bright blue, but I won't know for sure until it is lettered. I was looking for a 25-2 when I got a chance to get this one. I got it several years ago at a really good price, not even knowing what I was buying.

I've got one that looks just like the picture from wundudnee but mine is in .44 special. actually a friend built it from a model .28. its not for sale. we put it in a Randsom rest and it shot a 1 1/2 inch group at 50 yards. that's what I call a keeper.

I really like shooting my .45 cal. 1955 target model. It shoots quite well and just a fun gun. pretty similar to the 1950 but the 1950 is just a cooler gun I think.

Default Buy it!

Very handsome example at an affordable price. And a five screw to boot! You can sell those grips on Ebay and buy a pair of period correct ones. But you might find the grips that are on the gun are more comfortable to shoot and manage the recoil. Just my two cents..

As soon as I saw your first post, I thought that's got to be Dave Keith's work. A real beauty!

Well, she's home now. I'll post some photos after I run some errands. Figured out the light strikes also. The moon clips it came with are out of spec. They are all flat, but they are anywhere from 5-10 thousandths too thick. Most wouldn't even allow the cylinder to close. I'll fix that with some sanding. FYI the new wilson combat ones are anywhere from 1-5 thousandths out of spec also. At least for this Model of 1950. I won't be able to check function in the PC 625-8 until late next month. Photos to come soon.

But when it did close...she was a peach of a shooter. I'm very happy.

I found one several years ago for a grand at Cabelas. It came with target stocks that had several pieces out of the stocks like someone had tried to jar the empties out. Obviously didn't use moon clips! I didn't either, but did not pound the gun on the bench to get the empties out. I have not shot it much, but don't think I ever used moon clips. Just pluck them out with a fingernail.
