Which One Should I "Letter" Next?***Verdict Is In!***
I have acquired several interesting S&W revolvers of late. Now, the question arises, which one should get a history letter next?
Here are my options:
1) S&W Pre Model 40 Centennial-- low 4 digit serial number.
2) .38DA topbreak with a 6" bbl. from 1902.
3) 1905 4th Change .32-20 w/ a 6" bbl.
4) .32 New Departure Safety Hammerless circa 1917 with S&W medallion pearl stocks
5) Pre War .38/44 Heavy Duty 5" bbl. from 1940.
6) Model 58
7) Pre Model 37
Which should it be?

I would go with number 5, it is possible it could letter to a police department.

Definitely the .32 SH, it has the highest chance of being a special order gun to an interesting destination.

I vote #4, as well. Those probable factory pearls would be confirmed if originally shipped with the gun.

I'd have to vote for all of them. I recently bought a pre-29 which was correct, but with no special provenance. When I got the letter, it was shipped as a special order to an assistant director of the INS in 1958. When I did a little research on him, it turns out he had a very interesting career, including a case that went to the Supreme Court, and some minor involvement in the JFK assassination investigation by the Warren Commission.
You never know what you have until you get the letter!

You seem to have quite an interest in S & W revolvers. Have you considered becoming an SWCA member? Access to the member side of the Forum (and the Historian, Roy Jinks), the annual Symposium...and $10 off per letter. Quite the deal  .
