Default Triple Lock "Find"

A good, knowledgeable friend ran across a 6 1/2" fixed sighted TL the other day. The finish (blue) appears to be original, about 60%; bore, chambers, and lockup are good. . 44 Special, serial # 3767. No photos at the moment, unfortunately; OTD price, $850.

From what I am told, a S&W adjustable rear, postwar style sight has been added; front sight base was slotted for a taller blade to match the rear, secured with two pins. The job appears to be professionally done; unknown by whom; possibly the factory but no additional factory markings indicating later work found so far. No factory letter.

Sounds like a shooter. I prefer unaltered guns but my friend is interested in this one. I don't quite think the added sights are a factory job, although I think it was done occasionally. I'm inclined to think it was done back in the 40s for an active target shooter--when TLs were more common.

Just thought I'd throw this out for comments. Sounds like a decent old TL that can and should be shot once in a while...

What say you?

I would buy it. First it is a triple lock, second not many S&W big bores around for that kind of money. It is not all about how collectable they are, how pretty they are. How do they shoot and how much would you like shooting it. But, then I have a stack of S&W and many of them are not original, and some have some blue loss. My all time favorite, a model 18 looks like ****, I round butted it long before I even knew about collectable. I love shooting it and it is accurate. I love it and wouldn't trade it. for a nice original one.

Bat, just do it. I paid in that range for a ratty looking and gunked-up but unmolested TL last year. All it needed was a good cleaning and a set of period correct stocks. It shoots just fine and although it isn't anywhere near collector grade its one I'm quite happy to have.

Bat,

Find out if it has a factory re-work date on the left side grip frame under the stocks.
