Based on serial number, you have the final type, 8th. Value would be somewhere between $375 and $500 according to the 4th edition of the Standard Catalog of S&W.

Good luck finding ammo. It can be found, if you got enough money...

Maybe 6 months ago I saw one at a gun show with a $350 price tag on it. I thought about it but didn't buy. I don't remember too much about its condition, it wasn't too bad, but I think yours is better than the one I saw. Over 35 years ago I had one of these back in the days when I was a fairly avid collector of early US pocket pistols. You can fire .32 ACP ammunition in it as you are very unlikely to find any .35 ammunition today. The differences between the two cartridges, dimensionally and balistically, are minimal. Someone will probably feel like chiming in to say you shouldn't do that, but they will be wrong. I fired hundreds of rounds of .32 ACP through mine, no problems whatsoever.

You asked the value? What did you pay for it? They are an easy gun to buy and can be difficult to sell. Done it many times.

Yes, quite scarce ammo. Here's a box (well, a partial of only 49 cartridges) that is circa 1916-99. Not sure when the manufacturers stopped making it. Neat little gun for a collection.

Its last appearance was in the 1937 Remington ammunition price list. I am surprised it hung on that long.

They are really a collector item for S&W aficionados who've got everything. It's amazing how few people even are aware of their existence. It's also amazing that someone at S&W seriously thought this interesting but awkward design, in a proprietary caliber no less, would be competitive when Colt and Savage were selling hundreds of thousands of their considerably less exotic .32 pistols.

I don't think a lot of people buy these as shooters, and considering that many are in very nice shape like the OP's, the original customers likely didn't either. I've got one that shows clear evidence of holster wear, indicating someone actually carried it for duty or protection. Rather unusual. This one cost me $300 plus expenses about three years ago.

It's a cool looking pistol. Is that the magazine release just under the trigger guard or some sort of grip safety? I remember reading about these but have never seen one in the flesh.

It's a grip safety. Asymmetrical, more naturally depressed by a right-handed grip. The mag release is at the heel, and the most awkward feature is the actual safety, a wheelie thing at the top of the backstrap.

You didn't by chance pick that up at the show in Cumming, GA, did you? If not, it has a twin!
