Unhappy Does anyone want to see my Purple Box?

It's old and coming apart at the seams, just like me, but what can you expect from 63 years of age? I just picked it up from my FFL.

How right you are, it is defined as maroon in the SCSW, I have Charlie Tuna syndrome (please excuse).

Yeah, it did come with a gun. Here ya go!

When I Dros it, I will get some better photos, instead of the ****** phone photos. I was in a rush. Here's a right side advertisers photo(s).

Thanks for looking! I'm very excited to have my first long tube, 1st pre 27, and I love all the accoutrements.

...and you should be excited...very excited. That is a beauty and one of my favorite S&Ws. The long-tube 357s are the most elegant of all the S&Ws and those RW Smooth Presentation Stocks on that beauty are outstanding!

Thanks for sharing,

Thanks for sharing,
Thank you! Your comments are greatly appreciated, particularly with your collector's background experience. I read some of your threads, as well, like your recent engraved project.

In my thoughts, I see the long barrel "357 magnum", as a "Thoroughbred", in that it is long, lean, elegant, and powerful. I never would have though that I would ever purchase and 8 & 3/8", though I did recently buy a 27-2 6", when I couldn't find the right (condition/price) 4".

Long story (pardon the pun) short, my son got me back into the guns when going to the range, and in February, I bought my first gun (Shield 40) since 1995. However, I immediately gravitated to my true love the Smith revolvers. Since then, I've purchased, a 627-5, 64-7, 646, 431PD, 631, 27-2, 29-2, 29-7, 28 no dash, & now the pre-27. I've become more interested in the history, & more interested in the 1950-1960's guns.

I love the grips also, I've read about the various grips, boxes, etc. in the SCSW, and this site coupled with the level of expertise has exponentially sped up my learning process. And it's good to hear the comments of the many experts here, like yourself. Thanks!

I like your "thoroughbred" description - very appropriate. Note the discription on the bottom of the 1940's ad :

Like you, I too never thought I would purchase anything with a barrel longer than 6". I don't know what happened to me, but once I purchased one, I discovered that the long ones are like potato chips - one is never enough. I love the old ads, auto and gun memorabilia. I always watch the "American Pickers" program. Sounds like I got the description right!

Default S.W.H.F. Letter today!

Well, this one went better than my model 28 letter. This gorgeous pre 27, has the most outstanding finish of any gun I've ever owned, no dings, scratches, & mirror blue finish!

It came optioned very nicely with white outline rear adj. sight, target hammer, and red ramp front sight, and beautiful unrelieved Rosewood smooth cokes.

Here's the letter, from S.W.H.F., that came today, only 17 days, after I mailed my request!

Can anyone decipher the grease pencil writing on the box. I gather the 1st line is the serial number"107929", the 3rd line appears to be "Red Ramp", and this old guys eye can't make out much more. Sixth line appears as "LH" left hand, perhaps?

What would be "LEFT HAND" guys?!?!

I would think its a reference to the hammer. Perhaps the in house people called it something different in those days?

Yep you're right. I was thinking maybe left-hand threads on the extractor rod, but it's too early for that.

I think "LH" = "Large Hammer" ?? In this case what is commonly referred to as a "target hammer"... And I think the "???" is "Front Sight" - the context is right...

So, here is what I think the complete back of the box scribbles mean:

S107929
Bright Blue
Red Ramp
Front/Sight
White Outline Rear/Sight
Large Hammer
Rosewood Target Stocks

Matches exactly with the letter. You guys are great! I was an investigator at one time, but I was never going to solve this one! Much Thanks, all!

Think about it, that is 1954 scribble, that you guys Deciphered!

Thank you! I really appreciate the compliment, especially given the many great Smith & Wesson revolvers owned by other forum members.

Sometimes you just stumble into a good one! I really can't believe the finish (my first 50's revolver) on this beauty, and then to be fortunate to have the original box and tools, is a blessing.

I won't take this for granted, and don't expect this will occur with any regularity.

RKMesa in particular and some of the other SME's got me hooked on these long tube, classic beauties! S.C.S.W. & the forum bretheren is a definite advantage.
