Welcome! This is an N or large frame revolver called...the .357 Magnum, from about 1954. The 5" barrel is somewhat scarce and these are highly collectible in the current market. Similar guns have sold in the low four figures ($1000-1200) in similar condition.

Now you have to tell us about the other guns in the photo! . Hope this is helpful.

Those on my list with nearby SNs to yours all shipped in 1954. The adoption of model numbering occurred a few years later, at around SN S183xxx.

Very helpful Thanks. I started another thread about the .45- 1917 but have no idea how to share that in this quick reply. I understand it to be made in 1918. As for the .44 I have not yet researched it yet. Gifted from my late Father-law. Do not believe it to be super old but to me Priceless.

I have pre-27 #S103335 shipped Jan. 21, 1954. It also has a 5" barrel, my favorite. It letters to Rex Firearms in NYC as do many revolvers now considered 'special'.
Your will look great after some judicious clean-up.

I'm more of a user of my handguns. Thou I have a few that I will never fire. I'm a novice collector at best. But lately older S&W revolvers have me hooked. I've lightly cleaned with your basic Birchwood Casey, Rem Oil, Hoppe's 9. I'm still nervous to do any more. Any beginner tips on preserving would be appreciated. I do keep them in a silicone sock in a Liberty.

Sounds like you have the cleaning part down fine. I like Renaissance Wax for preserving the finish. Enjoy!

To the OP, welcome to the forum. I have a question for you. If the revolver on the right in your 3rd picture is a M1917 in .45acp, it looks like your pre-27 has a 6" barrel. Did you measure from the cylinder to the end of the barrel?

Really nice revolvers.
