Default Grips and Boxes=Value?

I have a 1960 K22 Model 17 4 screw. I did not come with original box or grips. I have recently purchased a period correct box with warranty card -two months off from actual mfg date and instruction booklet as well a set of period correct diamond grips. I added these more for my own satisfaction than anything else but I do wonder if they actually added anything to the value. I'm think more when my kid inherits, although she'll most likely keep it.

Opinion please.

With the additions, it is worth more than the gun without proper style stocks and the box, but not quite to the level of an original setup in the same condition.

Welcome aboard from Wyoming.

Warning! Asking for an opinion 'round here is, well, you'll find out.

If a person spends any time at all reading the threads on this forum they might easily be drawn into the period-correct box and grips syndrome. I prefer matching grips, but it has more to do with my younger days of appreciating Chevys with all matching numbers than the current trend here (oh, heck, I don't know, maybe it's always been that way with gun nuts, too. It probably has.).

For my money a gun with matching grips, even if both the gun and the grips show a bit of wear, trumps a 98% gun without matching grips or a matching box.

How many here still have the window sticker from the last vehicle(s) they bought? I do -- my 2005 Dodge Ram. It's a blessing vehicles don't come in boxes!

In fact I find a non-matching box to be a real detractor -- I have to find something to do with the bloody thing. I only have one non-matching box. It's a nearly pristine container for a late-'60s Model 37, and its job is to house my business card collection. It performs flawlessly, but a wide-mouth coffee cup did that duty before, and now I have an extra, unused coffee cup -- truly a conundrum. So many vessels and so few jobs.

To be honest I don't even like matching boxes. I have five, and I don't store their respective guns in them. Thanks to this forum I feel an obligation to preserve and protect the boxes, but what a pain! It's not as though I could flatten them to reduce the storage space, is it? i could store five more no-box guns in the space these precious cardboard containers occupy. Thank goodness they can house the obligatory papers and cleaning kit that also came with the tool (the gun).

So, again, welcome, and be careful asking for an opinion 'round here. You never know when one of these crotchety old curmudgeons is going to give you what you asked for.

I'd like to see images of your K22 when you get all that figured. I'll bet it's a beaut, and your daughter's a lucky gal.

Cheers,

Bob

Tough call. It is really what it means to you. Having period grips and a period box won't hurt the value and may well increase the value over the years as the value of all three will go up.

My 1947 K-22 with matching stocks and box is priceless to me as it was my father's. It would have been if the stocks and box weren't there as well. So????

I assume you mean K frame target stocks, since both Magna and Target stocks from that era were diamond style. Right now there is a gap in values between a non-model 1957 and earlier and a 1958 and later model numbered gun. The pre-models are gaining value quicker than the 17s. There is also a value gap between early gold maroon boxes and blue boxes and a big premium is still being paid for non-relieved target stocks versus football cut-out varieties. All this means is that you may only be adding a small premium to your gun with those items, since any owner can purchase stocks and a box.

Lastly, I have a firm belief that the parts are often greater than the whole with vintage S&Ws. A non-matching boxed gun usually sells for less than the gun and box separately. Also, I do not see much premium paid for Smiths with target stocks versus Magnas. If I were to guess, and you were to sell your collected set, it may well sell for about the same money as if it did not have the box or the targets today. That may change in the future as the collector boxes and stocks start drying up. The key is that you enjoy it either way.

Thanks for the replies folks. Until my purchase of the Model 17 (no -) I had no experience of vintage guns but I do have quite a bit of experience with vintage guitars.

With vintage electric guitars, as with vintage and classic cars, original parts are very important, however period correct can have value at least as much as the price of the part. Cases for instance often get seperated from the guitar but a replacement period correct case would add value above a modern case. Even if the value is not greater than the cost it nonetheless makes the instrument more desirable to a buyer.

Being new to the game I paid a bit over the odds for the box but got a really good deal on the grips. I'm guessing they balance each other out and I won't loose money in the unlikely event I'd want to sell. Pretty damn sure my daughter would keep the gun when she inherits.

BTW, it's the coolest thing to have a daughter who owns guns and loves to shoot. We have Daddy-Daughter days at the range whenever I visit her and a couple of weeks back we went to the NRA museum together.

On a shooter grade gun, it does not help that much. On a collector grade grade gun it would help MORE. Boxes and papers are a nice extra, but never kept me from buying a gun without them. Bob

To any real hardcore collector a non original box will mean little although as you say at least it's period correct. It might mean more to a newbie or just an accumulator and you might get a few bucks more because you have them.

Most experienced collectors can spot a fake S&W label and instruction sheet a mile away - but many newbies are easily fooled.

I don't blame you for procuring a period correct box; I do the same for my own satisfaction too - on the rare occasion the original is missing on a purchase. Anytime I sell a gun (rarely sell them though) I ether keep the box for future use or tell the purchaser it's not original. I maybe one of the few here that actually stores all my hand guns in the boxes inside my safe and having the correct box helps me find what I am looking for. After a while all the boxes start looking the same.

I just recently purchased a few reproduction boxes for a few Colt Auto's (1903's & 1908's) that are about 100 years old. Getting the original boxes with something that old is extremely rare and quite expensive. The repro boxes I bought were less than $15 bucks each, obviously not original, but again, a convenient and nostalgic way to store them.
