Default 44 specials & stags

In the last few years I have grown extremely fond of vintage stag grips. In that time I have also taken a liking to 44spl, so needles to say I love combining the two!
Today I decided to do a group picture of my "stagged out" 44's, & I wanted to share them with those of you who also appreciate vintage stag.
Pictured is my refinished Triple lock, 2nd model with Kings Cockeyed hammer & short action, 3rd model transitional modified by Mirco Sight company & 3rd model Wolf & Klar that has a Fitzed trigger guard.
Thanks for looking, & please post some of your favorite vintage stag grips too!

Paul

Paul,

That's a beautiful and stunning group of stag 44s.

Please explain the " short action" 2nd Model? Is that a King modification?

Love the 44's! Here's mine. Grips seem to have never been fitted, and have a great palm swell on each side.

I really like stag but have original stocks on most of my Smiths. Plus they can be a little rough with heavy recoiling guns.

Yes, it's a King modification. Is has probably the smoothest action of any of my Kings guns.

What magnificent revolvers!! I love the .44s....but my favorite barrel length is the 4". Is the 4" the one with the "Fitzed" trigger guard?

Love the stag stocks!!

Best Regards, Les

Les,
Yes, it's the 4" W&K. I know most hate the modification, but I got it for a price I could live with & it's a awesome shooter.
The gun came out of Oklahoma and I can't help but to believe this was someone's service weapon.

Oklahoma service weapon from Oklahoma for the .44 maybe, but that "sticker" has;.. "used in New Orleans" written all over it.

My .44 special came today, so I tried the old pair of Samber stags on. They look like they were made for each other.

Default Really Old Grips

Old "service style" stag grips on my 44 special. They are both ugly and beautiful.

They are. Also easy to bring back to life.

A little dye in the bark grooves the color of dried blood and a re-polish can do wonders.

Default One of mine.....

Here is a King conversion with some really nice Sambar stags. This is a Model of 1950 Military 44he.

44 specials & stags-dscf0526_zpsvoj1solo-jpg

This is a long since sold 2nd model with jigged bone.

44 specials & stags-dscf0164_zps4ccbcbcd-jpg

And this is a Wolf & Klar 44he 3rd model with those same jigged bone stocks. I think that they looked better on the 2nd model, but they fill a void until I can find some steer head stocks in ivory or MOP.

44 specials & stags-dscf0557_zpshrnguqa9-jpg

And to Paul - your collection makes me weak at the knees buddy....That Fitzed 3rd model could very easily live with me if you ever decide to give it up I like it almost as much as your King 38-44 Super Police

And before anyone makes fun of my wood pile - that stack is only for BBQ, we don't use wood to heat the house here in South Texas

Not jigged bone which look fake because the lines always curve to follow the grip curve, and are smooth cut grooves.

Delta those do look like jigged bone . Perhaps hand jigged actual bone, rather than mass produced synthetic copies ?

M Conrad 0311 - Those grips are nice. On second look , the front sight cought my eye ! Is that a small Gold Bead inlet to the top of the original sight ? Was this a semi common thing ? I would have thought I would have seen , or read description of something like that before.

The front sight was described as being a USRA style with brass being neatly added to the top. I have also heard it referred to as a 1/2 target sight. I am not very knowledgeable as to the prevalence of this sights use, maybe someone else would better be able to speculate on this issue. Here is a close up of it.

Wow !

That wasn't a modification to original sight, but full custom pinned in . Perhaps that was designed to fit the rules for a particular Class of USRA competition ?

What woodpile. I thought it fell like that when cutting up some wind blown limbs. OK, if you don't use wood or gas, what do you use? Buffalo chips?

I have several nice sets of Sanbar for K frames, but only jigged bone for my N's.
5" Triple Lock.

4" HD

5" HD

And then, there is this set, which really freaks me out because I can't understand why. Jigged Ivory.

Bruce,

You have an excellent array of different style jigged bone examples which can be a 'learning moment' to those that are confused with Sambar Stag, to compare with the real McCoys in Posts #1 & #2 above.

The jigged ivory are the first I've ever seen and probably as rare as hen's teeth! They may be sacrilege to some. But they make sense on a large cal handgun that might get a little slippery with smooth grips and sweaty hands in a gun fight .

The jigged ivory are the first I've ever seen and probably as rare as hen's teeth! They may be sacrilege to some. But they make sense on a large cal handgun that might get a little slippery with smooth grips and sweaty hands in a gun fight .
Don't that just take your breath away?!!

Funny part is, they were listed on ebay as Stag for $150 about a year ago with just two poor photos. I contacted the seller and told him they were most likely jigged bone. He updated the listing and dropped the price to $80. He also added an additional photo which appeared to show Schrager lines on the base of the stocks. As it was, I was the only bidder. When I had them in hand and saw they were indeed ivory, I contacted the seller to tell him. He apologized for the mix-up and offered to either refund my money or adjust the price downward if I felt it was necessary.
I graciously told him I was happy with them just as they were.

My 44's with stags.
top is a 1931 houston police dept 3rd model W&K, marked HPD 38 on the back strap. Bottom is a 4th model 4", a newer addition to the herd that I'm really liking.

I like them. The maker removed enough of the bark so they won't bite you.

Here's my Thunder Ranch with retro style stag grips but you'll just have to wait 50 years for them to become aged!

Default Here's My W&K .44 HE 3rd Model

This is my BBQ gun, a Model of 1926 that was part of a '27 special order shipment of 20 4" nickel revolvers to W&K (lettered by Mr. Jinks). Unfortunately, it was modified sometime back in the 40s or 50s (replaced the half-moon front sight with a ramp, and re-nickeled). But for what I paid at a local gun show, it was well worth it. The elk stags are from Pat Grashorn, and are obviously not old...but they will be someday! This is a great shooter, although it's actually at Ford's right now for a little gunsmithing. The Cattaraugus hunting knife (pre-Case) is original pinned stag- it's been handed down in my family for over a hundred years!
