1917 commerical
I am going to look at a commercial 1917 and was wondering what these are going for. I have not seen the gun yet, so am going on what he says. He is asking 1900. for it. says it is in 95% with a Jinks letter. Is this a fair price or is he shooting for the moon? Thanks for any help you can give me. John

Is it a factory engraved target model ? If not, it's a moon shot, unless the letter identifies the recipient as a VIP shooter, etc. Ed

That does sound too high. I am wondering if anyone here can give a price closer to the current market value.
I was guessing it should go above $1,000 but don't know how much above. Would $1,200 be close?

Pre-war commercial 1917s 95% or better have been selling for around $2000. I'm not sure he is out of line on his pricing. I sure wouldn't let mine go for less than that. Here's what the SCSW, 4th says:
• Commercial variation: Considered rare. A few shipped with nickel finish worth additional premium. A small S&W trademark is stamped on left side of the frame indicating a commercial production. May also have a lanyard ring. Commercial shipping box is a one piece maroon cardboard having a cloth hinge with “S&W” .45 DA” inside the lid. Boxes: Two styles of box are reported: One variation is a maroon two piece 12” long with a blue end label that reads: “U.S. ARMY 45 Model, Blued 5-1/2”, Smith & Wesson, Springfield Mass.” Inside the cover it has instructions in English and Spanish. Has a patent Date of Dec. 28, 1920. Th e other is also Maroon about 13” long with no writing at all inside or out. $2500 to $3000 in nice condition.
• Denver Police Dept.: Reported that fewer than 100

They are all over the map. A well known dealer has had a few extremely nice commercial 1917s sell for less than I'd expect. Under $1,500. In my experience, the 1917 commercial and 1950 army (pre-22) are often regarded as scarce or rare by people/authors/sellers but they have a small following and realized prices are generally much lower than you may initially expect. The outliers as always are 99% guns with their matching box. If there are any condition issues the prices tumble. At 95% condition that almost falls into shooter grade pricing for these.

Hard to tell about prices on these. I bought a Commercial 1917 at a local auction in July of 2016 for considerably less than $1,000. (I wasn't looking for one but the bidding was so low I jumped in and got it.) It had been professionally re-blued but otherwise in excellent condition with numbers matching in all 5 places as well as matching grips. Didn't know much about these until I purchased mine. Since then I regularly check sites such as GB and go to auctions, etc. and have never seen another one for sale. I have posted pictures previously. I have not lettered it but am considering in future
Good luck. They are a great piece and fun to shoot.
