Well, I finally got my two newest acquisitions to the range for some exercise. The 1917 snub is simply a belly gun. The front sight is too short to be effective. It took me several cylinders to finally figure out it was shooting about a foot high. I literally had to hold it well below the target to get it on paper. That's why you don't see any targets.



I was shooting at a paper plate target at 7 yards. This is what our range looks like.



Over in my other thread on the sadly abused Model 16, a number of you asked how it shoots. So, I'm pleased to say it shoots quite well and has a wonderful action in both SA and DA. The 1/4" or so of corrosion in the bore is apparently not affecting its accuracy. I'm not much of a target shooter, so don't judge the gun by my grouping.



I shot around 10 cylinders and only had 1 FTF. The primer was dented pretty good and it did fire on second try. These were lead semi-wadcutter reloads so I'll attribute it to the cartridge.

I even managed to get two cylinders of Double Action on the paper.



Well, Roy and Don should have gotten my letter request today. So, I should know if this Model 16 shipped with a 5" barrel and ramp front sight in a few weeks.

I wonder if whomever ground off that front sight was shooting real light bullets in it.. That might drop the POI a bit.

On the other hand, at bad breath range if you aim the first one at his belt buckle and just keep shootin' the 3rd one is gonna be right there in the boiler room.

Keeping fingers crossed on 5" Bbl! Might try 185gr swc match in 1917 see if it gets you on paper. Maybe the sights were set up to point at the belly and hit in the heart, lol. Nice range too.

Steve, I think the sights were kept small for looks, not function. This thing needs a sight the size of a sail. Would look like a razor cutter.

I'm digging the 1917, it looks all business (well, them stock's a lil' fancy!), despite, or maybe because of, the crude chop job. Looks just like an old war-horse that got put into civilian service should look.

+1 to try some different weight bullets, it might help quite a bit. I was bemoaning the fact my VM was shooting off vertically with 148 gr wadcutters, but it turned out that fast 158 grainers were right on POA/POI at 25.

Guy, I can send you the can opener off the front of my M&P target if you like. I think it would fit the bill of razor cutter well. In seriousness, I love both of those revolvers, I am glad that you had a good day to get out and give them some exercise. You have a great range to to do it at.

That snubby was probabaly ground off to make it a quicker pocket draw gun ,thumb on hammer snatch it out of your pocket and fire ,think 10 feet not ten yards .Just my guess ,cool guns thanks for posting and cool range also.
