Trying to find Info on my S&W
I believe it is a Model 36, 38 S&W SPL. on the barrel, Hand Ejector, 5 Screw. S/N has no letter and no Model # where cylinder folds out. Serial number on butt of grip just shows 8434XX. Any help would be appreciated.

My Father in law gave it to me, said it was his fathers police service pistol. Other than that, I really have no info on it.

Your Chiefs Special is a J frame and was a favorite with plain clothes policemen and as a back up with uniformed officers.

I thank you for the information. I am trying to get good info on it so I can get a fairly accurate insurance value, Not that it would really be replaceable given the reported family history with it.

that is a Military and Police (K Frame). appears to be a pre war or (post war transitional) frame with a much later 2" barrel.

That looks ????? like a 6 shot revolver ...... not 5 ..... with football target grips from the mid-50s..... if so it's a K-frame not J and would be a pre -10 with a 2" barrel.
No letter prefix on the serial number (?) makes it a M&P dating from 1940-45.....700,000-1,000,000

The hammer and the thumb piece clearly indicate production before 1948. The serial number pushes that back to before
April, 1942. In the 843xxx range, it would have an S in front of it, if it were a postwar gun.
This is a K frame .38 Military & Police revolver from the early 1940s, and the barrel is a later replacement.
It also looks like the gun has been reblued with the postwar bright blue finish. Probably done when the 2" barrel was installed. With the shorter barrel, the extractor rod was also replaced.

...easier to look at in this orientation...a right side view would tell a lot more...number of side plate screws and type of address...
...edit to add the right side view...

Thank you all for the great info. I was thinking it was a early to mid 40's model but wasn't having much luck finding a lot of usable info. Sounds like I may need to try and get a letter from S&W with the specs to try and see exactly what it was shipped as.

I'd bet if you letter it, you will find it shipped with a 4" or 5" barrel, possibly a 6". Unlikely it was a 2".
I noticed something else, when looking at the re-post of your picture, put up by ParadiseRoad.
It appears that the extractor rod has left hand threads. That would mean the barrel replacement was done after about 1961, when the thread direction was changed. That would also account for the bright blue finish.
Even with the "upgrades" this would be a sort of fun gun to own. A long action snubby with a ramp front sight and smooth target stocks.

Ah! Your right side view confirms my suspicion regarding the extractor rod!

No question that it is a pre-WWII K frame with a much later replacement 2" barrel. As your posting #5 said, you are looking for an insurance value. As it is not original in any respect, it would have very little, and in fact I wouldn't bother insuring it. You might use $300.

...I'd pay more than $300 for a 2 inch K frame...hard to find any S&W around here for $300...

Another tell tale sign of refinish - look at how the edges of the side plate are rounded by buffing , giving the side plate seam an open , dished out appearance. Also , the "M" in "MADE IN USA" is partially buffed away.
Frankengun or no , I'd be glad to own it - especially with family provenance. Enjoy.
