Default Date for 4" M&P pre war

Gonna check approximate shipping date for a M & P 4 inch blue commercial. It has the wrong stocks, but I like the diamond Magnas that came on it. Serial number is 632727. Should it have silver medallion walnuts? I am assuming that it is a commercial unit, because there are not any proof marks on it.

I've got some numbers for you; good solid dates.

s/n 621236 shipped 2/34
a five inch s/n 644224 shipped in 2/34
a nickel s/n 619781 shipped in 4/30

all over the park it seems but I'm guess late 20's, early 30's.

It looks like a 30's M&P, no mushroom on the extractor rod, one line USA and a five screw.

It is nice looking.

I have six SNs listed in the 632xxx range, all of which shipped in either 1/1931 or 4/1931. So I'd say it's likely, but not definite, that yours shipped sometime in early 1931. Correct grips would be round top checkered wood with the small silver medallion. In good condition, those are not so easily found.

Those on it are the so-called sharp shoulder Magnas, correct for the 1946-53 period.

#594451----March 8, 1929

#640816----February 8, 1932

Which is to say Mike's pretty much right on.

Ralph Tremaine

As is DWalt, who types faster than I do.

Indeed the 1930s style stocks aren't easily found, and not cheap either, but the early post-war magnas are worth a bit too, so don't part with them cheaply if you do find correct ones.

I just bought this revolver and am hoping it is a 1938/39. I believe the grips are correct for the 30's.

I don't have possession yet. S/N is 675xxx.

I think you've got pretty good odds. I'm using the attached one as a benchmark, the highest lettered pre-war commercial one I have on record, #662952 from June 1937. I didn't win the GB auction

That is a beauty. I hope to know the shipping date tomorrow. That is a nice tidbit about the s/n in Roy's letter.
