M&P Postwar 6" S serial number series
Got lucky on this one. It was advertised as a 1942 Hand ejector. Serial number of 944068.
What it is is serial number S944068. Numbers match on the barrel flat, frame butt, cylinder, extractor star and grips.
Almost has to be a 1947 shipping.

More bad news.
Someone modified the front sight by filing away some of the back side of the "moon" and then cutting in a object of some kind at the top of the sight; maybe elk bone??

But I am keeping it. Can't wait to get it to the range with that "expert" sight fix. I wonder what else they did to it. But it does have a nice bluing to it and once I clean it up it should be presentable as my newest shooter.

Thanks for posting, Mike. I had this one in the database already, but some of the information was incorrectly reported. All set now!
BTW - this one likely shipped in Sept/Oct 1947.

I thought that front sight looked odd in your first pictures. Glad to have my suspicions confirmed. But sad.
This one should still be a good shooter!

With the light behind you that tip does stand out. Will be interesting at the range next trip.

Just heard back today. This one shipped in Nov 1947. A little surprised but then I remembered it was a Smith and Wesson.

I did manage to get it to the range the other day. It is a good shooter, too bad I'm not.
Next trip will be with 148 grain wadcutters.

Took the 1947 to the range today with some 148 grain wadcutters. Nice time had by all.
24 rounds at 7 yards
then 25 rounds (seven at the head) from 10 yards

In my collection, I have # S-987266, shipped 4-13-1948. One of the last to have the long throw hammer. A transitional, as I think they call these. Beautiful revolver and 100% matching. Probably will never shoot it. Big Larry

Nice shooter, Mike! I have a 2" that is in very nice condition with all matching numbers. Serial is S962592. I am told that it is a very late 1947 gun. Hope that is correct as it makes it a birth year gun! I think the "S" serial numbered K Frames are a neat relatively small bunch of S&W revolvers.

Back in the 50s when most of us were kids, there was all ways some guy in the neighborhood that spent his time "personalizing" some prize possession that he owned. I view them as treasures.

It will be close.
s/n S9618xx (5") 12/47
s/n S954xxx (2") 12/47
s/n S9692xx (2") 2/48
and I agree, I am a big fan of the postwar "S" prefix K frames. I have a 4" 1946, a 6" 1947 and a 4" 1948. I may have to add a 2" and a 5" to my 2018 wish list.

Thanks very much for that info, Mike. You are right, it's very close but it could certainly go either way! I'm going to continue to think that maybe around Christmas time and January first will be correct. If not, that's just fine.
And if you can add those two to your inventory of "S" K Frames, it would surely make a very nice "accumlation" of them!! Good luck in your quest to do so!

It shipped on December 16, 1947, to Sloan's in NY. 2" square butt.
