Nevermind that I have always wanted a nice K22, better yet an early post war K22, but when I had seen the SN K1000, I was self goaded into buying it. Whould this have been a 1946, or is this probable 1947? All numbers match. It is as close as I have come to a 3 digit SN on a S&W.

I don't blame you a bit. Fairly certain it is a 1947. I have a 1947 as well but not with such a cool s/n.

Mine is K8726 and it shipped in Nov 47. K1332 shipped in 7/47.

If you'll notice , the 1000 serial has the prewar barrel extractor rod, where Mikes has the later postwar extractor rod. Having the prewar extractor bumps the price up a bit. That and the asking price would interest me more than the 1000 serial. Now if it was 101 or 102, that might help.

K983 shipped in 3/47. I have a note that only a very few K-22 shipments (perhaps fewer than 100) were made in late 1946, and I list many SNs lower than yours which shipped in 1947. The barrel-shaped extractor rod knob ended around the K4xxx-K5xxx range and there is a scarcity premium for those.

I once said that a few had shipped in 46, but was corrected to 1. And they didn't ship in serial sequence so you can't interpolate ship date by serial.

Much as I hate to admit it, I probably would have bought it had I seen it. I would be one of the first to point out that serial doesn't add any value, and I also would pay more myself. I'm a liar.

I list two with 1946 shipping dates - K133 12/7/46 and K151 12/12/46. No reason there could not have been several more. K-22 SNs started at K101.

I'm guilty. Not so much with S&W revolvers. I've bought firearms because the prefix started with "US" or "FDE". I even bought one that ended in "1970" because that's the year of my birth. Heck, I even bought something in 40 cal once because the serial number ended in "040".

No, I have never let a serial number talk me into buying a gun, but I'd have been tempted by 1000.

I do have a gun with a serial number I'm fond of---aside from one small problem. It's 11112.

That was a great suction buy! I bookmarked it and had a brain fart until after it closed.

That's definitely a neat serial number to have. I personally like it when serial numbers are "flush" like that. However, I don't seek them out, and I'm not sure if I would buy a gun just because of a serial number though.

I wish I would have waited a little and found an earlier post war K22 myself, but I ended up with one of the last P&R examples from 1980. Extremely well built and accurate but the surface polishing leaves a little to be desired. It has a neat serial number that had no influence on the purchase, which is 81 K22 81. I just wish the gun would have been made in '81 instead of '80.

Other than that, I don't have any neat serial numbers. I'm just happy with whatever I happen to get with my lucky purchases.

Well, now that I've had more time to think about it, had I seen you looking at it and considering buying it because of the serial, I would have advised you not to buy it and that the serial adds nothing to the value. Then when you put it down, I would have jumped in and got it. Does that make the OP feel any better?

So if I subtract 101 from 1000 then I really have K 899? It is a three digit SN! well I'll be..., but I still like K1000.

I'll trade you a REAL 3 digit (K 956) K22 for K1000 even up.

It's one of those gotta have wants at first sight right?

Not really but the new grandson when he was a little baby asked me to buy a 1948 s&w k22 for him. It was his first words. "Will you buy this for me grandpaw please?" I really gotta have it. With my big tough guy image my heart melted like chocolate in 125 degree sun.

That's a neat find!

The only gun I have with a serial number that matters to me is the Glock 22 (I know, I know........) that I retired with in '08.

Ours was one of the early state police agencies to make a large order, so we got special serial numbers. Mine is AST0236. Alabama State Trooper 0236 (0236 was my badge number).

Peace
