Default 2 inch snubnose donor gun suggestions.

I've recently picked up a very nice never installed .38 spcl 2 inch barrel with the half moon sight. I want to swap out bbls with another gun with matching blue but am curious about what my donor gun should be. Pre model 10, hand ejector, model 10, post war M&P, a modern K frame? Are the bbl threads comparable? My bbl came with a 2 inch ejector rod which would be the other potential issue. I also prefer the prewar style of checkered grip as opposed to the magna grips. Though I'd really prefer a nice set of stags. I'd appreciate any suggestions the forum might offer.

Well you can pretty much put it on any K frame of the 1905, 4th Change and later variety. The extractor rod is another question, though. Is it right or left hand threaded? If it is contemporary with the barrel, it is probably righty tighty. That means you'll need a frame and cylinder no older than 1958 to ensure the rod will thread correctly and also has the pin holes for the barrel pin. This might be an interesting project for a beater Victory. The barrel isn't just thread in and you're good to go, though. It will probably require some fitting.

Guy, just checked the rod and it is a right hand thread. Is there a certain serial number that I need not to go below?

As long as the frame is a 5-screw, the ejector will be right hand thread. The upper sideplate screw went away just before the change to left hand threads. If it's a 4-screw gun, it might be either. Any model numbered gun should be left hand.

As Chris says, stick with a 5 screw frame and you should be ok. I think the pre-10's were near C500xxx when the thread change occurred. Somebody like JP@AK or DWalt with a database might know.

You can tell the thread-handedness of the 2" rod. If it has a machined groove below the knurled tip it is LH. That happened with the first production of the Model 10-2 in 1961. Any K-frame stamped 10-1 or 10 (no dash) will be OK, as will be any other earlier K-frame without a model stamping on the frame.

Interesting thread! I'm guessing you'll do the work yourself so when you decide take plenty of before and after pics for us to enjoy . My vote is with Wiregrassguys suggestion an old beater victory that deserves resurrection would be interesting .Oh yea also keep detail of your tools ,and methods you use maybe you can even do a video of this project .Now even I can tell the difference between Lh and Rh threaded guns thanks guys for education I know a lot of this stuff is old news to y'all but for us just getting started its important information to know.Heck until a few months ago I didn't realize what a " victory " model even was ,I been shooting these guns for years and I " thought " I knew something boy was I mistaken.

One question: Do you want the end product to be a square butt or a round butt? I think that should be the first thing to consider when considering the donor.

Curl, I've not seen many round butt M&Ps except the snub version in the C series SN range. I know they made some but I suspect he would have to hunt for a while to find one with a longer barrel that is suitable. I suspect he will have to live with a square butt.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I wanted a square butt donor for this project. Heres a nice original nickeled pre model 10 and a pitted up mixmaster that I fitz'ed.

I decided to use my 6 incher for the donor gun that I picked up years ago. Decent finish with nice grips. I removed the 6 in bbl with no problems but can't quite get the 2 in bbl to true up so I'll let Fords complete the bbl install along with a bright nickle finish. These are the before shots.
