Default Can anyone tell me manufacturer date for my pre model 10?

I've had this guy for at least 10 years now. I am curious about its history. I was told when I bought it that it was an old police revolver. That's about all I know. I can assume that it was refinished at some point as it is nickeled. My understanding from other posts here is that s&w never nickeled the hammer.

So the info I have is, it's a 5 screw pre model 10 with a 4" barrel and round butt. Its serial # is 597XXX.

Can anyone give me an estimated date of Manufacture?

Not a very good photo but that s/n would probably make it a .38 M&P hand ejector (or Model of 1905 Change 4).

Somewhere in the late 1920's, early 1930's.

And I have also heard that if the trigger and/or hammer is nickeled it is not factory work. S&W left them alone (case hardened).

This one is s/n 535xxx and should look a lot like yours.

obviously not nickel and it is a 5" barrel and the stocks are not original.

p.s. I use postimages.org

Thank you! I thought that it might be from around that time but never knew how to confirm it.

And just to pick nits, it's an M&P model. The Pre 10's would have been post war before 1958 when model numbers were introduced. And I agree, most likely a refinish. S&W would have case hardened the trigger and hammer. It it should make a fine shooter.

Yes. The key difference between your M&P and the one shown by Brendog10 is the extractor rod knob. Yours still has the mushroom shaped knob, while his has the barrel shaped one. That change on the .38 M&P happened in about mid-year 1927. This is an important spotting feature on the revolvers from this era.

I agree that Brendog10's gun appears to have been refinished, due to the color of the hammer and trigger. But the stud end has not been heavily polished, so someone was more careful with this one than many we've seen with an aftermarket finish.

That one likely was made between 1928 and 1930 and has the same engineering as the later Victory revolvers. The grips are aftermarket. As far as the plated hammer and trigger, never say 'never' with S&W. They did occasionally plate them for something like a special ordered presentation gun but their cataloged guns were primarily case hardened. They have also flash chromed some hammers and triggers.

Well, yes, it does have the earmarks of a refinish. But it might also have been nickel plated originally. That option was available. If you open the cylinder and look on the bottom of the barrel, you should see the serial number on the barrel flat. Off to the left of that (toward the muzzle) you may or may not see the letter B. If the B is present, the gun originally shipped with a blue finish. No B usually means it left the factory with a nickel finish. This test is not 100% foolproof, but during that era it is mostly reliable.

Closest SN I have listed to yours is 5944xx which shipped in 3/29. But I list another one with a slightly lower SN (5941xx) which shipped in 8/28. Take your pick as to the year. S&W did not ship in SN order. I'd say it is fairly certain your was plated or re-plated sometime after it left the factory. And most collectors would not call it a pre-Model 10. Those came around 20 years later.

Well sure. But I responded to him before he had the photo figured out.

Thanks, Jack. Wiregrassguy had given me that tip just last week and it is a good one but I didn't know the year it happened.

Very interesting information. I had no idea the differences between and M&P vs a pre model 10.. So following jp@ak info I checked and there is indeed a B mark under the barrel. So safe to say it's a refinish.

Also as a side note as jsfrinks mentioned this thing is an amazing shooter. It blows even my more modern revolvers out of the water in terms of smooth function and especially accuracy. Even with the small sights I can easily hit targets at a fairly far distance. Clearly s&w has been high quality even with revolvers that must have been produced in really high numbers.

Welcome to the Forum.

Post WW II, S&W altered the internal geometry of their revolvers. Yours has the long action, while the pre Model 10s have the short action.

Yes. The change came in about early 1948 on the K frames. I have quite a number of long action revolvers and nearly as many with the short action, from 1951 onward. Initially billed as the "high speed hammer" the new design had a quicker drop, but it sacrificed some of the smoothness of the older long action, especially when fired in DA mode. For shooting, I much prefer the long action. As much as I love my postwar K-38 and K-22 revolvers, my long action M&P revolvers from 1946-1948 now go to the range with me more often than my more modern guns. ("Modern" here is relative, since I own nothing that is newer than 1982.)
