K15 question
I picked this up in a pawn shop recently. I know just enough about Smiths to know that I don't know anything at all. I'm wondering what I have.
Inside the crane : sn# K371xxx, under that K15 ( no dash )
Under star extractor : the number 1
Bottom of grip frame has matching serial number
Left bottom of grip frame has the number 2 and under that the numbers 40391, to the right of that in the corner the number 5
Finish appears to be nickel but, can't find the letter "N" stamped anywhere . The bare grip frame looks stainless to me.
Obviously a 4" barrel for 38 special
Any advice would appreciated, thanks.

Model 15 formally know as K38. It's a K frame (like Models 10, 12, 13, 14, 65, 64, 19, 66. Some of these are 357 mag) adjustable sight 38spl. Good guns used by police, security and prisons for a long time. Can't tell you about the finish, as far as I know they were all originally blued. Looks like yours may have been refinished. The original hammer and trigger are case hardened and yours look polished

It's a model 15 (as stamped in the yoke cutout), which would have been from between 1959 to about 1961. It appears to have been refinished in nickel as shown by the nickel hammer and trigger. The other numbers are factory internal codes of various types. Hope this is helpful.

It doesn't say "K15" on the yoke cut, it says MOD 15, as it should. As stated by murphydog it is a Model 15 .38 Combat Masterpiece. It clearly has been refinished in nickel.
The serial number dates it to 1959.
Should be a good shooter.

Look under the barrel on the barrel flat and see if there's a B stamped there ahead of the serial number.

The Model 15 did come in nickel. SCSW 4th edition indicates a 20% premium for nickel. My local vintage/collectable dealer has one for sale for $675. (Of course the trigger and hammer wouldn't be nickel.)

It is too young to have a serial number on the barrel flat. Also much too young for the B, even if it did have the serial number in that location.

Of course they did; you are quite right.
The fellow you quoted also called it a "K38" so he may have been thinking Masterpiece and Model 14, instead of a Combat Masterpiece. The Model 14 was normally blue only.
