what to look for in a k22, pre 17? k22
So recent threads have me thinking about adding a 22lr to the mix. I'm looking more for a shooter than collector. Knowing that some of these have been shot a tremendous amount, when 22lr was cheap and plentiful, what should I look for.
To whit, I feel reasonably confident assessing centerfires for wear, lock up, endshake, timing etc but I'm not sure if this translates to the rimfire world as well. Any tips will be welcome

Reason: darn auto-correct.

Any problems you are looking for in center fires also applies to rim fires, of course, however you are much less likely find excessive wear on a rimfire, cause by high pressure ammo., than on a center fire. Look for bore erosion, forcing cone damage, cylinder stop wear, etc. and other effects of firing lots of rounds of the past life of the gun when .22 ammo. was plentiful and cheap. Post war K22s are plentiful and not too expensive and have an excellent chance of still being relatively unused. Ed.

Evidence of excessive dry fire. Peening/marring around the edges of each charge hole.
Has anyone ever shot out a .22LR K frame? I mean the barrel, forcing cone, etc. Mine is from 1931 and pretty well used, and only the finish shows any wear at all. Barrel is pristine.

K22 pre model?
Sorry for posting like this, eyes must be really tired, can't find the post new thread button....
I have a K22 CTC (looks like H22)
# on butt is K (big gap) 134XXX but number inside post is B42XXX with a 3 underneath.
in doing more research than I probably needed, I believe it was mfg apprx 1951 (K104,088-136690)
I'm needing a new Extractor rod for it but after ordering a few wrong ones from numrich, I'd like to narrow it down a little bit more to save some $$. (wrong barrel diameter & wont screw into gun.
K means K frame right?
some search shows it's a pre model 17....what makes it pre-model 17? should I be looking for pre model 17 for the part?
the existing rod is 2 11/16" & the barrel is 4"
it's not a left handed thread.
any & all help appreciated.
thanks!

Yours would actually/most likely be a pre 18 with the 4" barrel.
Model numbers didn't start until 58/59 so many use the term/prefix pre on them. S&W at the time yours was made it was a K 22 combat masterpiece.

THanks for the info to add to my search. Just narrowing in on the right part to get this gun working great!
(I said it was 4" long, but I mis-wrote. it's over 4" long (6" barrel to be exact)
pre-18 opens a few more doors to track it down.
thanks again!
