I'm surprised the letter didn't mention anything about the humpback hammer.

Yowzer!!!
Another sweet vintage steel piece. You get all the nice ones.
I would like to point something out, and even though I'm not a S&W at heart, this is why I still love the old Smiths too, but just look at the picture of the topstrap and see just how perfectly that barrel is mated to the frame and on top of it is the checkering which they got almost perfect. The checkering extends the whole rib, the whole way back around the sight, and continues on with the hammer, but a slightly larger pattern. That is just amazing manufacturing quality you can't find anymore.
Also, I now see another King reflector base sight option I mentioned in your other thread. This one has a red bead, or a patridge with red post? Not sure what it would be called. This setup might actually work since there is something to light up. I guess folks would have to read my post in your other thread to know what I'm discussing here.

Some major league bummers-----------------------
I have an 8" .32 caliber 1st Model Single Shot. Officially it's a 10" .22.
I have a 6" 2nd Model Single Shot. There's no record of the barrel length.
I have a New Model #3 Target chambered for "38 WINCHESTER CTG". There's no record of the caliber---but the guy that made the holes clearly knew what bits to use.

Beautiful gun, Kris! That's a King ramp reflector double mat front sight base with a King red post #131 blade. Same as on my RM #1417 and it letters. They were made specifically for the Registered Magnums. It's too bad it and the HB hammer are omitted on the invoice.

6 Inch Non Registered Magnum
Guy, thanks I'm aware of what the sights are, King Guns are my favorite. It is a shame they weren't listed on the invoice but I don't have any reason to doubt they are correct. I wonder if H & D Folsom simply wanted a 6" 357 and didn't care about options, and that's why they weren't listed (they just grabbed an available 6" and filled the order).....

I knew you did. I posted the info for others not as familiar. They must have specified what they wanted. Wasn't the HBH an option...well, duh...the whole gun was a smorgasbord of options. But, I guess my point is they would have had to tell S&W the configuration they wanted. Well, the mystery sure won't spoil your enjoying it.

Invoices usually only list items for which there are extra charges. If the hammer and sights were standard features for this model, they would not be listed. The documentation on Registered Magnums was very specific to each revolver, but not so for other models. Much of the time, the serial number is not listed on the invoice.

Interesting ....... my RM 4629 (S# 57163) was shipped April 25th 1939..... to a Wholesale Hardware Co. in Pittsburgh....... full details were in my letter; sights, grips and sight in info.
Yours is still in the RM serial #range per SCS&W3rd....... but shipped an a non-RM.......Hummmmm. Not sure why but I always thought non-RM were all "Police" orders.

We don't rely on the SCSW, that's only a guide. We look at actual shipping records and the invoices if they are still available. The last RM's were mixed in with the first non RM's, until all of the RM's were shipped. Not all of the non Registered Magnums went to law enforcement. Orders from both the civilian and law enforcement market were so strong, Smith & Wesson decided to standardize the model.

Nice gun, would have been a nice one to see at the NE Ohio Bunch last weekend. Is the rear sight a "U" notch?? Ron stole the show with the 5" Pre-26 and a nice 27-1. Larry

Sorry I'm late to the party - been busy working a bunch of hours lately.
That's a great gun Kris. Congrats on another fantastic find.
