Default 5" postwar m&p

I saw where someone on this forum was doing research on S serial numbered m&p s. I found one in the back of my safe and thought I would give out the necessary info required. the full sn# is S853729 . 5" barrel. All sn#s match except the grips which I think are newer as the number branded is 61175 w a double stamped k. I estimated this weapon from aprox 1946. do you agree/ Thanks Bill

That would be JP@AK. He will find you.

I show a 6" S8531xx that shipped in 11/46. In fact it is his.

He has a nice set of questions for you as well.

Of course we know the factory didn't ship in sn-order, but for reference Roy says S860172 shipped in December 1946.

S853729 indicates a high probability of shipment in the 11-12/1946 period based upon other nearby SNs on my list.

Thank you very much for posting! The generosity of many on this Forum in sharing information with me has been extremely gratifying and is making it possible for me to accumulate a mass of data about this historically peculiar period in S&W history. My database now references more than 900 examples, which is getting me close to being able to make some generalized assumptions about the evolution of features in the 1946-48 period.

I will send my questionnaire to you via PM. I greatly appreciate your cooperation.

As Mike stated, I have one in my own collection that is only about 620 numbers away from yours. Roy has confirmed a November, 1946, ship date for it. Of course there are always deviations, but mine and other known ship dates in this serial range indicate a high probability that yours also shipped that month.

Mine has a 6" barrel, but 4", 5" and 6" guns all show up in that range.

Thank you. Yes. The pictures answer the remaining questions:
Stocks are much later than the gun, so the washer question is irrelevant.
The stud is the pressed type.
The thumb piece is the later style.

No surprises here, but I do appreciate the clarification.

Correct! So far as I know the letter prefix was never included, just the digits.
